r • .1.. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Attorney Manuel Zechman Manuel Zechman, former general counsel for the De- troit Street Railways sys- tem (now Department of Transportation), died Nov. 29 at age 66. A native Detroiter, Mr. Zechman was appointed DSR general counsel in July 1963 by former Detroit 1VIANUEL ZECHMAN • Mayor Jerome P. Cavanagh, and held that post until Oc- tober 1968. He was a graduate of the University of Detroit's law school and received an hon- orary doctorate from that institution in 1969. Mr. Zechman was an attorney with offices in Troy. He was Nat Singer, 73 Nat Singer, a retired la- dies apparel merchant, died Nov. 26 at age 73. Born in Montreal, Mr. Singer lived most of his life in the Detroit area until his retirement six years ago to Florida. He founded Ley- ton's in 1950 and prior to that was in wholesale ladies apparel. He was a member of Tem- ple Israel and was a charter member and past president of the Women's Apparel Club of Michigan. He re- sided in Hollywood, Fla. He leaves his wife, So- phie; two sons, Walter of Miami and Harold; two daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Leatrice) Brawer and Mrs. Seymour (Barbara) Davis; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He leaves his wife, Bess; a son, Neil; and a sister, Mrs. Simon (Beulah) Sauter. Freddie Krauss Freddie Krauss, a real estate manager, died Nov. 29 at age 62. Born in Detroit, Mr. Krauss was an executive with the Colonial Depart- ment Stores until 1965. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith and Cong. Beth Shalom and its men's club. He resided at 13051 Oak Park Blvd. He leaves his wife, Rhoda; a daughter, Iva; two broth- ers, Maurice I. and Burnett J.; and a sister, Mrs. Irving (Brinnie) Rubin. Harry Friedgut, 75 Harry Friedgut, A. former Detroiter who was asso- ciated with the United Jew- ish Charities here the 1920s; died Nov. 27 in San Diego, Calif., at age 75. Mr. Friedgut earned a BA degree from Queen's Uni- versity in Canada and later an MA degree from New York University while he was a director in Newark, N.J., of the YM and YWHA, a post he held for 12 years. He later became manag- ing director of the New York music foundation and when the New York City Center opened, he was called by former New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia to be- come its first director. Mr. Friedgut also was an administrative assist- ant at the Jewish Theolog- ical Seminary and later director. of the American Friends of the Hebrew University. He then went into business with his son and retired eight years ago. He is survived by his wife, the former Rose Fisher of Detroit; a son, Oscar D. of Boston; a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Esther) Marshall of San Diego; two brothers, five sisters, five grandchil- dren and two great grand- children.
