Jerusalem Symphony Pleases Near-Capacity SZ Audience In its Detroit premier Saturday evening, during its 30-city debut tour of the United States, the Jerusa- lem Symphony drew a near- capacity audience to Cong. Shaarey Zedek for a diversi- fied program of music. The program was opened by host Cantor Jacob Barkin who led the audience in the Star Spangled Banner and Hatikva. The Jerusalem Sym- phony, under the direction of its Berlin-born American conductor, Lukas Foss, pre- sented_Rossi's Symphony for Orchestra for a delight- ful opening number. Tzvi Avni's Meditations on a Drama followed, and it was heavy, moody music that was dramatically similar to the theme of the movie "2001." Soloist Lidia Mordkovich was unable to perform be- cause of illness, and Vera Vaidman played the violin solo in Bloch's Nigun move- ment in - the Baal Shem Suite. Shaarey Zedek president Harold Berry and Cantor Barkin made brief welcom- ing remarks after the inter- mission, and th-e orchestra concluded with the four movements of Mahler's Symphony No. 4. Soprano Cilla Gross- meyer gave a beautiful presentation during the fourth movement, to con- clude the performance. Cantor Barkin called the 'Jerusalem Symphony, "Israel's second ambassador (of music), and by no means second in rank to the first (the Israel Philharmonic)." The orchestra pleased the audience with its highly appropriate encore, Jerusa- lem of Gold. NOR LES SALES 2260 Scott Lake Rd.
