Britain, Egypt Negotiate Major Arms Purchase

LONDON — Britain so-
lidified its position as a po-
tential major arms supplier
to Egypt by assuring Presi-
dent Anwar Sadat during
his London visit that it
would supply up to 200 An-
glo-F-rench Jaguar strike
fighters and would cooper-
ate in military supply pro-
grams ranging from tank
engines to avionics equip-
ment.

The Jaguarbuy is partic-
ularly sensitive because of
Israeli concern in having
new weaponry that could af-
fect the balance of power,
according to Aviation Week.
If the deal goes through,
it would be tied to another
deal involving supply of
Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca
Adour engines.

While in Britain, Sadat
had a private meeting with
top officials of the Minis-
try of Defense Sales Or-
ganization, British Air-
craft Corp., Hawker
Siddeley - Group, Vosper-
Thorneycroft Shipbuild-
ers, Plessey Co., GEC-
Marconi and Westland
Helicopter-s.

Sadat's other prime inter-
est is in re-supplying his-
ground forces with anti-
tank and anti-aircraft mis-
siles.
He concluded one agree-
ment for a supply of BAC
Guided Weapons Div.

Completion of the Jag-
uar deal will depend on
bilateral talks with
France on production
sharing. The Egyptians
are known to prefer to
train on the aircraft in
England, and for this rea-
son a. special school in
management of sophisti-
cated weapons is being set
up.

The Egyptians are known
to be interested in supplies
of the British Chieftain
tank, but there is some re-
luctance in political circles
in London to this move
mainly because it would

Story of Spanish Dictator
Told in 'Franco and Jews'

NEW YORK = With the
recent death of Generalis-
simo Francisco Franco, who
had served as absolute ruler
of Spain for nearly 40 years,'
thousands of Jews around
the world paused to mourn
the passing of a man who
has been credited with sav-
ing countless numbers of
them during World War II.
These facts are documented
in a forthcoming book,
"Franco and the Jews," aut-
hored by Rabbi Dr. Chaim
Uri Lipschitz.
According to the author,
the 82-year-old Spanish dic-
tator came to power in the
wake of the Spanish Civil
War in the mid-1930's with
the help of Benito Mussolini

A beautiful way to celebrate
thisTraditional Holiday

Chanukah . . . a holiday steeped in tradition. A time to surround
oneself in the lovp of family and faith. It's a special holiday, and to
remember it, David Wachler has created many special pieces. One is
sure to express all you feel, because every one is custom' designed
with you in mind.

and Adolpf Hitler, but he
later turned down all of
their impassioned pleas for
-alliance during World War
II, deftly stalling 'off all
pressure tactics and suc-
cessfully retaining a posi-
tion of neutrality until the
Axis countries were de-
feated.
During the fighting,
Franco maintained trade
relations with both sets of
belligerents, but it was the
leverage he had as a neutral
that enabled him to rescue a
reported 45,000 Jews from
almost certain extermina-
tion at the hands of the Na-
zis, according to the book by
Rabbi Lipschitz, who is vice
president of Research and
Projects of the Yeshiva To
rah Vodaath and Mesivta in
Brooklyn.

According to the mate-
rial, there is a distinct pos-
sibility that Franco may
have been partially Jewish
himself, but there is no
question that in France, in
Greece, in Hungary, in
numerous other European
countries and even — in
1956 — in Egypt, Franco
succeeded in getting'Jews
released to Spain, rather
than fall victim to govern-
ment genocidal plans.

Franco declared a world-
wide repatriation of Sephar-
dim, the descendants of
those exiled from Spain in
1492, and insisted that their
rights be protected. In this
way, he arranged for the
release of tens of thousands
of them, with their Ashken-
azic brethren.
After keeping them in
Spain long enough to permit
all parties concerned to dip-
lomatically save face, -he
released them to the United
States, Great Britain, South
America, North Africa and,
later, Israel — anyplace
where they wanted to go
and who would take them
in.

With the measure with
which man metes to men, it
will be measured to him
again.

contribute markedly to an
imbalance of power in ar-
mor with Israel:
The Sadat plan also cov-
ers purchase, or license
production, of up to 10,000
British Leyland Land Rover
vehicles. --
It is believed in London
that Sadat now has avail-
able about $2.4 billion in
procurement funds, with
about double that in the
.pipeline from Saudi Arabia,
Kuwait and the. Arab Emir-
ates.
One problem, military
sources said, is that each
Arab government wants
separate preserhations, on

their soil, of the equipmen t
that will be purchased by
Egypt, and this will tend to
delay final decisions.
