OPEN THANKSGIVING DAY
This is the story of an Is-
raeli physical educator who
learned the hard way that
being an Israeli is not
enough.
Dr. Hillel Ruskin, head of
the Department of Physical
Education at the Hebrew
University, was traveling
abroad two summers ago
and had made arrange-
ments to join physical edu-
cators from Israel at the
Zurich Airport in order to
fly with them to the USSR
to attend the international
meeting of FISU, the inter-
national body of physical
educators.
The Russian Ambassador
who was stationed in Switz-
erland would not permit Is-
raeli journalists to accom:
pany the athletes to Moscow
to cover the university
games, despite the fact that
visas had been issued to the
writers.
The Ambassador calmly
ripped out the visa pages
and then turned to us and
said, "Well, I don't see
any visas inside these
passports."
THE WHOLE FAMILY
will delight in dining here.
Enjoy fine food, comfort and
service at reasonable prices
too!

Dr. Ruskin attended the
FISU General Assembly
and explained to the group
what had transpired.
"I was appalled at the sil-
ence that prevailed in the
meeting room and was
stunned when not even the
United States delegate
lifted a finger to help us in
our protest against this
malicious action. This was
the first time in my life that
I felt that the whole world
was against my people, the
Jewish folk. I felt like
crying, but I saved my tears
for later in the week."
Dr. Ruskin described his
view of Palestine Liberation
Organization leader Yasir
Arafat sitting with Kremlin
leaders at the Games, how
Russian Jews stormed the
playing field to mix with the
Israeli athletes, and how
they were beaten by the
KGB secret police.
The Israeli basketball
team was booed unmerci-
fully by the crowd, and So-
viet Jews who unfurled
banners in the stand were
beaten by Soviet police
during all four games.
Only at the Moscow Syn-
agogue was the Israeli dele-
gation able to mingle with
the crowds.
"I left for home with the
firm resolve that my future
services as a physical educa-
tor had to be built around
the premise of improving
the quality and raising the
standards of health and
physical education in Jew-
ish community centers and
YM-YWHA's . . .
"I felt it was my duty to
aid staffs to convey the
meaning of Israel for the
Jewish_people, to interpret
Israel as a rich resource in
Jewish programming and to
build a stronger bond of
understanding between the
Jewish people of Israel and
North America."
As a result of his experi-
ence in Russia, Hillel Rus-
kin's thinking and philoso-
Get On The Right Track'
Famous "BIG" Tyme Sandwiches
phy, so far as sports is
concerned, has changed
considerably. He is de-
pressed over the fact that a
study he made at Hebrew
University indicated that
51 percent of deaths in Is-
rael were due to the failure
of the cardio-vascular sys-
tems.
It was established that
this was due to the fact that
only three percent of the
population is active during
leisure time.
"I have studied every
piece of writing I can on the
psychology of aggressive
sport, on behavior, on 'life-
time' sports. I have spoken
to -everybody who will listen,
preaching the message that
people must exercise in or-
der to live. It really doesn't
tale much — maybe 15 min-
utes a day jogging easily,
just enough to raise the
heart rate to 130-140 beats a
minute. Just enough to
create a training effect.
"People have to be in-
structed in sports so that
they can participate after
the age of 30. Most of them
don't realize that when they
hit 30 they are really old
people, physiologically
speaking."
In pursuit of this type of
programming, Ruskin
joined the staff of the Na-
tional Jewish Welfare
Board as a special consult-
ant, where he can give of
his .experience and train-
ing, at the same time com-
mitting himself and his
students to a Jewish exist-
ence.
Dr.
Ruskin
says,
"Physical activity in Juda-
ism is invested with human
dignity and spiritual sanct-
ity. Judaism believes in the
soul, and the body must be
regarded as a sacred temple
of the soul. Some of the spir-
itual giants of Judaism be-
lieved that every activity of
man should be purposeful.
"According to Maimon-
ides, the purpose of physical
activity is to serve as a
means, not as a goal, to-
wards the achievement of
man's major purpose on
earth. The Maharal adds
that intellectual activity
specifies that man and the
body shall be taken care of,
in order to serve as a staging
area to the activities of the
mind. Without a healthy
body man cannot achieve
completeness and therefore,
physical activities are justi-
fied."

"Hester Street," a film
about the Americanization
of East European immi-
grants who settled in New
York's Lower East Side, will
open for an exclusive De-
troit showing Dec. 19 at the
Somerset Cinema.
Set at the turn of the cen-
tury, the film focuses par-
ticularly on Gitl, a bewil-
dered immigrant wife who
is unable to Americanize
herself fast enough to suit
her Yankee worshipping
husband, Jake.
