sion of the recent 78th ZOA
national convention in Chi-
cago.
The convention took place
Oct. 2-5. The ZOA clarifica-
tion was in connection with
remarks attributed to
Klutznick concerning the
Conference of Presidents of
Major American Jewish
Organizations.
Actually, the ZOA state-
ment of clarification said
Klutznick was not even
present at the concluding
session Oct. 5, at which time
he was already in Israel. He -
addressed the convention on
Oct. 3, when he and Jacques
Torczyner, a past president
of the ZOA, participated in
a symposium on the subject:
"Should American Jews In-
tervene in Israeli Affairs?"
Furthermore, the ZOA
statement of "clarification
continued, Klutznick was
misquoted in remarks he
made in the course of the
symposium regarding the
Conference of Presidents.
While he did mention that
"it was not good for Israel to
have a benign Jewish com-
munity in the United
States," and while he advo-
cated a more independent
stance of American Jewry
on issues concerning Israel,
he did not sugge-st in any
way that the Conference of
Presidents should be dis=
banded or replaced.

Israeli Pound Devalued 1.5 Pct.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Government officials said
Tuesday that the latest de-
valuation of the pound will
not set off a new round of
price hikes for food and pub-
lic transportation. But price
stability is expected to be
short lived because of
planned massive cuts in the
government's subsidies of!
basic food , products and
transportation.
The pound was reduced
by 1.5 percent Monday and
now stands at IL 7.10 = one
dollar.
It was the fourth Tnstance
this year of the so called
"creeping devaluation"
which permits the govern-
ment to depreciate the
pround by up to two percent
every 30 days if necessary.
On Sept. 28 the pound
was devalued by 10 per-
cent in an effort to con-
serve the nation's dwin-

NEW YORK (JTA) — A

record number of 1,050 Is-

will be held throughout the
United States and Canada

of the year, announced Mi-

dling foreign currency
reserves and stimulate
exports.
There was no massive run
on the banks or wide-spread
hoarding at that time be-
cause the prices of basic
commodities and services
were held firm by govern-
ment subsidies.
But the Cabinet is shortly
due to consider recommen-
dations by the Ministeral
Economic Committee for an
IL 1.5 billion cut in the gov-
ernment's present IL 4 bil-
lion subsidy program.
The uneasy feeling cloud-
ing the economic sector has
driven the local currency to
a new low on the black mar-
ket exchange.
Last week they were pay-
ing between 9.95 and 10
pounds for each dollar,
while the official rate of ex-
change was IL 7.00 = $1.00.
Only a year ago the pound
was selling on the black
market at 4.70 compared to
an official rate of exchange
4 4.20.
Since the establishment
of the state of Israel in the
year 1948 the value of the
Israeli •pound dropped
from IL 1 =. US $2.80 to IL
1 = US $0.14. This means
that the Israeli pound is

JNF Forests
Yield Revenues

JERUSALEM — During
the present budgetary year,.
the Jewish National Fund is
expecting an income of
about $1.3 million from the
thinning of its forests.
A part of this wood will
go to JNF saw mills, a part
to pulp-processing factories,
and the remainder to agri-
culture for use as support
posts, primarily in banana
fields.
The 60,000 tons of wood is =
the output of some 40,000
dunams of forest thinning.
The thinning itself must be
undertaken for a number of
reasons such as clearing old
tree plots for regeneration;
for increased growth-yield
of remaining trees; and for
the blazing of new forest =—
roads.

now worth exactly 1/20th
of its value in 1948.
Meanwhile, there are per-
sistent rumors that the gov
ernment has taken a secret
decision to exchange the ex-
isting Israel currency,
which is expressed in
prounds (Lirot), for Shekels
(Heb. Shekalim).
The intent, according to
informants, is to'accomplish
two aims: By exchanging
current bank notes, it will
be possible to expose "hot
money" on which no taxes
have been paid; and, sec-
ondly, it will be possible to
impose a one-time tax on
the exchange.
The government actually
employed this method in
1952 when it exchanged old
bank notes for new.
