Two hundred people will be needed for the task force. The State Department reports between 20 and 30 calls a day for information on applications. Both countries insisted that Americans operate the mon- itoring stations. GRAEME FLOWERS Israeli Tank Crews Remain on Guard BONN—What is probably the oldest Jewish museum in the world is to be reno- vated in Brunswick, Ger- many. It was first estab- lished in the 18th Century. Its most valuable exhibit, the interior of the only re- maining timber synagogue in Germany, is being reno- vated by the Landesmu- seum fur Geschichte and Volkskunde in Brunswick. The synagogue, which was built in 1766 and stood on a site in Homburg in the district of Wolfenbuttel, was taken down in 1923 and the remaining parts incor- porated in the Jewish Mu- seum which continued to ex- ist as a department of the present Landesmuseum in Brunswick, also after 1933. LONDON — The London Jewish Chronicle reported that at least two Jews, in- cluding the sexton of one of the main synagogues, have been killed during the latest outbreak of fighting in Bei- rut, Lebanon. In a telephone report from Beirut, a Lebanese Jew reported at the time that half of Beirut's Jewisl quarter was being occupie, by the Palestinians and the_ other half by Christian Phalangists. The two men were caught in a cross-fire at the syn- agogue, and both sides called a cease fire and sent food to the Jews. If the general rule of Ju- daism is to value life, this requirement includes valu- ing one's own life. A person who does not value his own life would have little regard for anyone else's life or life in general. A question is raised by some as to why martyrdom would be allowed whereas suicide would be prohi- bited. They answer this by explaining that martyr- dom is something which is in conformity with God's will because it spares the desecration of His major commandments. Suicide, on the other hand, is not an act in con- formity with God's will. Martyrdom is an act of gen- erosity where one offers his life under certain circumst- ances for the Divine pur- pose. Suicide, in contrast, is a selfish act violating man's commitment to life which was prescribed by the Al- mighty. A genuine suicide, if it can be proven to be gen- uine, would strip the de- ceased from his rights of eulogy and mourning. However, consideration is usually given by the rabbis to the understanding that however commits suicide is mentally disabled. Thus, he might be considered as act- ing under the compulsion of forces which overcome him and make him irresponsible for his actions. It is, for that reason, therefore, that suicide vic- tims are given proper bur- ial and are mourned ac- cording to Jewish Law. A contemporary problem in this area is that of those who direct that their lives not be spared in the case of incurable illness. Generally, Jewish law would be against such practice as a phase of suicide. 398-3664 THE MAGIC CLOWN!'"""
