"Sarah," in which Aca-
demy Award winner Glenda
Jackson portrays the almost
legendary French actress
Sarah Bernhardt, is cur-
rently before the cameras at
the Pinewood Studios in
Iver Heath, Buckingham-
shire, the locale of the major
production of "Fiddler on
the Roof" of five years ago.
Richard Fleischer was
chosen by producer Helen
M. Strauss of Reader's Dig-
est to guide the film dealing
with the 19th Century great
actress' tempestuous forma-
tive years in which she over-
came doubts and anxieties
with her indefatigable will
to succeed, emerging at the
age of only 35 as the leading
female performer of her
period.
"Sarah" is Dick Fleisch-
er's 37th motion picture as a
director.

Fleischer throughout the
years is quite exceptional.
"Doctor Doolittle," which
received an Academy
Award nomination, was a
family musical; "The Boston
Strangler" was developed by
Fleischer in semi-documen-
tary fashion with the use of
split and multiple screen
images.
Other pictures showing
Fleischer's ability to deal
with completely diverse sub-
ject matters are the sus-
pense drama, "See No Evil;"
"Tora, Tora, Tora," dealing
with the naval war against
the Japanese; the police
story, "The New Centu-
rions;" the fantastic, "20,000
Leagues Under the Sea;"
and the early medieval epic,
"The Vikings."
Just prior to "Sarah,"
Fleischer directed "Man-
dingo," a look backwards at
slavery in the American
south.
Born in Brooklyn, Rich-
ard Fleischer is the son of
Max Fleischer, pioneer of
animated cartoons and crea-
tor of "Popeye."

His first major feature
film, for Stanley Kramer,
"So This Is New York,"
from a short story by Ring
Lardner, remained unsuc-
cessful at the box office
though its star, radio co-
median Henry Morgan,
was extremely popular at
that time.

Meanwhile,
Walter
Matthau portrays the trag-
ic-comic role of Morris But-
termaker, former league-
pitcher whom booze has
pushed down to such menial
chores as pool maintenance,

for the (XiCC of one.

in the motion picture "The
Bad News Bears," now com-
pleted at Paramount Stu-
dios.
The yarn concerns a
group of bumbling misfit
kids who are molded by
their drunken "coach" Mor-
ris into a winning baseball
team, a team headed by
such unlikely hotshot play-
ers as pint-sized Tatum
O'Neal.
Matthau, in spite of his
athletic bearing, suffered a
severe coronary a few years
ago, and all his life had to
overcome being a loser.

Yiddish theater at the age of

11. Dreaming of becoming a
writer or even actor, he was
given a small part in a farce
entitled, "The Dishwasher,"
netting him 50c a perform-
ance.
At Seward Park High
School, he performed in
plays and simultaneously
scored in basketball, soccer,
track and swimming.
Discharged from the serv-
ice late in 1945, Matthau en-
rolled at Erwin Piscator
New School in New York,
with Rod Steiger, Tony Cur-
tis, Harry Guardino and
Gene Sacks among his fel-
low students in the dra-
matic workshop.
After three years, he won
his first Broadway role, that
of an 83-year-old English
Bishop in Maxwell Ander-
son's "Anne of the Thou-
sand Days." Subsequently,
he appeared in 16 _plays.
And his career began.
