POST
Parents of 410 Jewish
children attending public
schools were persuaded to
enroll those children in Or-
thodox yeshivot in an inten-
sive campaign by the Lubav-
itcher movement in the New
York metropolitan area last
fall aimed at children re-
ceiving little or no Jewish
education.
Rabbi Shmuel Butman,
director of the Lubavitch
Youth Organization, re-
ported that 130 children
were enrolled in Talmud
Torahs of Orthodox syn-
agogues and 320 in Release
Time classes under Ortho-
dox sponsorship.
The age range of the chil-
dren enrolled during the
campaign was from five to
13 years. Rabbi Butman
also said that the deteriora-
tion of public schools was a
factor in parental decisions
to transfer their children to._
yeshivot.
But, he said, the motiva-
tions of the parents was
less important than the

fact that their children
were now exposed to inten-
sive Jewish studies.
In discussing special tui-
tion arrangements at yeshi-
vot for new students with
slender Jewish back-
grounds, Rabbi Butman
said most yeshivot have
"some sort of arrangement
for cases of this nature."
He said about 120 Lubav-
itch Hasidim, men and
women, visited some 3,000
families in the area for the
campaign. An important
by-product of the visits to
the Jewish families was
that they provided oppor-
tunities for discussion of
other matters of Jewish con-
cern.
He said the volunteers
talk to the parents about the
Sabbath, kashrut, phylac
teries and related matters,
leaving a charity box and
candlesticks and candles for
mothers if they do not light
Sabbath candles, and for
their daughters.
