LI 7-6500 JO 4-5575 Ethiopian Jewish Residents Facing Cultural Extinction NEW YORK — The head of an organization that sup- ports Ethiopian Jews said that the ancient community of Falashas is in danger of cultural extinction. Graenum Berger, a re- tired New York social worker and the founder of the American Association for Ethiopian Jews, said that he had been told by the Jewish elders that young Falashas were leaving the traditional life of their scat- tered villages. Berger, a 67-year-old for- mer executive of the Federa- tion of Jewish Philanthro- pies in New York, has been committed to the Ethiopian Jews for the last 20 years. He has assisted some 400 of them to settle in Israel and has battled on their behalf against what he says has been the indiffer- ence of internaional Jew- ish organizations and some sectors of the Israeli Government. an interview with New York Times correspondent Mi- chael T. Kaufman, is that not all Jews have been ready to accept the Falashas, who are dark-skinned, as coreli- gionists. He added that there has been little concern shown in aiding their evacuation to Israel. Also, at the moment, the Ethiopian Government has prohibited anyone from leaving the country. Berger said that those who had gone to Israel had adapted well and worked as teachers, policemen and bus drivers. HIAS Reunites Soviets, Kin The problem, he said in Two sisters embrace at New York's Kennedy Air- port after a separation of 36 years, as they and other So- viet Jewish refugees, brought to the U.S. with the help of HIAS, are reunited with friends and relatives. HIAS, the worldwide Jewish migration agency, has brought 4,100 Soviet Jews to this country during the first nine months of 1975, and expects 5,000 by year's end. Eighty- eight communities in 29 states are settling the newcom- ers. An estimated 160,000 Soviet Jews are still waiting for exit visas from Russia. Jews Abhor Use of Slander Judaism takes a definite stand on slander. In order to invest the prohibition of defamation with the greatest possible weight, talmudic jurists in- terpreted the biblical in- junction, "Thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbor, and not bear sin because of him" (Lev. 19:17), as meaning that you may reprove your neighbor so long as you do not insult him: but if you make him blush or turn pale from shame or fury, then you have incurred guilt be- cause of him. Other biblical exhorta- tions — like "Thou shalt not go up and down as a tale bearer" (Lev. 19:16), or "Thou shalt not utter a false report" (Ex. 23:1), or "Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart" (Lev. 19:17), "Thou shalt not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge" (ibid., 18), and "Love thy neigh- • ' ' Feminist Claims Movement Used for Anti-Zionism 0.ftb, ENTLEMEN'S QUARTER WHERE YOU'LL HAVE A GOOD TIME LOOKING GREAT. Karen Decrow said dele- gates to the international women's conference in Mex- ico City last June failed to "endorse a statement con- demning sexism . . . on the other hand, they could en- dorse a statement condemn- ing Zionism." Equating anti-Zionism with sexism, she said most delegates at the conference represented "the nations of the world . . . (that) ap- prove of sexism and practice it . . . the same nations are anti-Semitic and practice anti-Semitism." bor as thyself" (ibid.) — have all been summoned to help invest the prohibition of slander with biblical au- thority, says the Encyclo- paedia Judaica. Instances of punishable slander are insulting a scholar, widows and or- phans. "Mistreating" wid- ows and orphans means, lit- erally, causing them distress. If one causes them distress by insulting them, God will heed their outcry as soon as they cry out to Him. His anger will, blaze forth and He will put the slanderer to the sword, and his wives shall become wid- ows and his children or- phans (Ex. 22: 21-33). This is a typical instance of Divine punishment. The punishment there- fore is expressly prescribed in the Torah: "and a coven- ant was concluded between them and the Creator of the World, that whenever they cry, He hears them and acts". Slandering the dead is also regarded as a great sin to be expiated by fast- ing and prayers, while a court may punish it by fine, the Encyclopaedia Judaica reports. The sages have said that "he who makes another's face turn pale in public, has no share in the world to come. Therefore, everybody must be very careful not to abase another man in pub- lic, not to call him a name which puts him to shame, nor to say anything that might embarrass him." Warsaw Ghetto Wall Destroyed LONDON — The London Jewish Chronicle reported that the last remnant of-the Warsaw Ghetto wall has been torn down by Polish Authorities to make way for a children's playground.
