Premier Yitzhak Rabin is

`Romanian Aliya Not Public Issue'

NEW YORK (JTA)

Rabbi Moses Rosen, the
chief rabbi of Romania,
urged those concerned with
the welfare of the Roman-
ian Jewish community and
with aliya from Romania
not to make the question of
aliya a public issue as it has
been for the last six months.
He said that during the 16
previous years in which
there was silence on the is-
sue some 300,000 Romanian
Jews emigrated to Israel,
the conditions of the Ro-
manian Jewish Community
improved and there was an
improvement in the rela-
tions between Romania and
Israel.
Rabbi Rosen's remarks
were made in response to
questions at a press confer-
ence at the office of the
Joint Distribution Commit-
tee. "I refuse to give any
statements on this prob-
lem," Rabbi Roserr said and

urged "other people to do
the same thing." However,
he noted the policy of re-
uniting families continues.

Charges that Romania
had clamped down on Jew-
ish emigration came up dur-
ing the Congress' considera-
tion of most-favored-nation
treatment status for Ro-
mania. Congress approved
the MFN bill after emigra-
tion from Romania report-
edly increased last summer.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
More than $1 million in Is-
rael Bonds was provided for

former Israeli Defense Min-
ister, was the principal

to assign the new Ministry
of Social Benefit to Ma-
pam's Victor Shemtov, the
current Minister of Health.
Hammer would get the
Health portfolio in ex-
change.
Meanwhile, according to
persistent rumors, Rabin
wants to remove Yehoshua
Rabinowitz as Finance Min-
ister and replace him with
Yaacov Levinson, head of
the Bank Hapoalim.
Rabinowitz has come un-
der mounting criticism for
not taking sufficiently deci-
sive measures to alleviate Is-
rael's economic crisis, espe-

cially
the
country's
declining foreign currency
reserves and lag in exports.
Rabinowitz has argued that
more severe measures
would lead to widespread
unemployment.
