Local Histadrut
to Hear Consul

Emanuel Shimoni, consul
general of Israel at Philadel-
phia. will address the His-
tadrut Campaign's leader-
ship Sunday at the Labor
Zionist Institute.
The address will be pre-
ceeded by a dinner. Attend-
ance is by invitation only.

Shimoni was born in Jo-
hannesburg, South Africa.
He emigrated to Israel in
1955. He joined the govern-
ment in 1962, and he has
served as director of the
bureau of the Ministry for
Foreign Affairs. In that of-
fice, he worked closely with
Abba Eban at the United
Nations, and.in 1969 he was
assigned to the ISrael Em-
bassy in Ottawa..

Since 1973 he has been the
counsul general of Israel in
Philadelphia with responsi-
bility for the states of Penn-
sylvania, Delaware and
southern New Jersey.

Youth to Attend
City-Wide Kinnus

Cong. Beth Achim's La-
hay United Synagogue
Youth group will participate
in the kinnus this weekend.
An 18-member delegation
led by Lahav President,
Jerry Friedman, will attend
the convention. Among the
delegates will be convention
co-chairmen: Pam Lippitt,
housing; Diana Burlant,
cultural; and Michelle Gor-
don, hospitality.

The Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan
Detroit, in cooperation with
the Archdiocese of Detroit
and the Detroit Round Ta-
ble of the National Confer-
ence of Christians and Jews,
will sponsor a day-long sem-
inar on the Holocaust for
teachers and students in De-
troit's 50 catholic high
school on Wednesday at
Mercy College of Detroit's
Conference Center.
Members of the metropol-
itan area Jewish community
will join keynote speaker
Father John Pawlikowski,
of Chicago's Catholic Theo-
logical Union.
Rabbi Joel Poupko, direc-
tor of the University of
Michigan's Bnai Brith Hillel
Foundation, will head a dis-
'cussion of the Jewish resist-
ance movement and the ac-
tivities of Polish Catholics
in helping and hindering
resistance. Dr. John Mames,
of Shaarit Haplaytah, will
present the testimony of a
survivor. Dr. Harry Jubas
will explain the relationship
of the Holocaust to the state
of Israel. Marty Pasternak,
Mark Owens, and Beth
Sandweiss will discuss what
it is like to be a Jewish high
school student. Finally,
David Bergman will present
a slide-tape commentary on

the Holocaust.
In addition to providing
resource persons to head
workshops and discussion
groups, the Council will sup-
ply bibliographical and les-
son plan materials for parti-
cipants of the by-invitation-
only conference.
