The volume contains the history of Doukas, one of the four, translated into En- glish and annotated for the first time. Doukas, descen- dant of one of the most fa- mous families in Byzantine history, relates the events of the last century of the em- pire. His knowledge of Turkish and Italian as well as his native Greek, enabled him to transcribe eyewit- ness accounts of the events he records. In his massive work, Doukas has preserved the sound and fury of the death throes of the great- est and longest-lived Christian empire in his- tory. The irreversible ad- vance of the Ottoman Turks, the distress and an- guish experienced by the Greek Christians at the impending disaster, the prophesies of false hope, and the fate of the empire being argued out over the religious issue with Rome, all form a part of the fasci- nating history recorded by this Byzantine author. He ends his history in mid- sentence as the Turks are launching their final as- sault on Mytilene on the island of Lesbos in 1462. Doukas provides cameo portraits of key historical figures. He describes the pillage, slaughter, and en- slavement of the Greek na- tion, and he also records the betrayal of the Byzantines by their Christian allies.
