of America introduced three
bicentennial publications at
a recent reception held in
the historic Second Bank of
the United States in Phila-
delphia.

Governor Milton J. Shapp.
Yosef Mayim Yerush-
almi, professor of Hebrew
and of Jewish history at
Harvard University and
chairman of the JPS publi-
cation committee, cited the
significance of the society's
offerings in honor of Ameri-
ca's 200th birthday and rec-
ognized the authors of these
works.

The bicentennial publi-
cations are: "Beginnings,
Early American Judaica,"
a collection of 10 publica-
tions, in facsimile, illus-
trative of the religious,
communal, cultural and
political life of American
Jewry, 1761-1845; "Haym

Farmington; a collector of
Judaic coins, stamps and

Jewish heritage six years

Bond Dinner Cites the Hamburgers

Metropolitan Detroit Jewish
community, have registered
for participation in the Is-
rael Bonds dinner, this Sat-
urday night at Cong. Beth
Achim, in honor of Dr. and
Mrs. Joel Hamburger.
A former president of the
Zionist Organization of De-
troit, president-elect of the

Oakland County Medical
Society, Dr. Hamburger is
among the leaders in the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign pro-
fessional division.
Mayor Yosef Almogi of
Haifa, Israel, and a candi-
date for the Jewish Agency-
World Zionist Organization
chairmanship, will be the

Numismatists Hear Program
on Israel Coins and Medals

Numismatists in the De-
troit area heard a special
presentation Tuesday eve-
ning at the 10 Mile Jewish
Community Center by the
Israel Numismatic Society
of Michigan, which hosted
the president of its national
organization and the direc-
tor of the North American
office of the Israel Coins
and Medals Corp.
Nahum Hacohen, repre-
senting the state of Israel,
presented a number of ma-
terials and programs spon-
sored by the Israel Coins
and Medals Corp., which
uses the profits from its
sales to subsidize archeolog-
ical digs in Israel.
Detroiter Sidney Blue-
stone, who is a vice presi-
dent of the national organi-
zation and member of the
board, described Israel coins

The clinic, begun by a
group of doctors 10 years
ago to help the "flower
children" who congre-
gated in the area, offers
free medical service, job
counseling for ex-convicts
and earned an award for
its dental care and preven-
tion program.

The American Israel
Numismatic Association is
the second largest organi-,
zation of its type in the
world, with 5,000 members
M less than eight years.

Both Hacohen and Morris
Bram, president of the na-
tional organization, dis-
cussed the achievements of
the organizations during the
past few years and future
plans for new issues, pro-
grams, next year's conven-
tion and annual tour of Is-
rael.

The Israel Numismatic
Society of Michigan meets
the fourth Tuesday of each
month at the 10 Mile Jew-
ish Center, and information
about the group is available
from Bluestone, 729-7700.

A demonstration calling
for stricter gun control was
held in Mr. Somberg's honor
this past week at the clinic,
which also began a memo-
rial fund named for him.
Besides his parents, he
leaves his wife, Candace; a
brother, Martin E.; and his
grandmother, Mrs. Goldie
Schey.

Ex-Detroiter Aided
L.A. Free Clinic

Former Detroiter Leon-
ard Somberg who died last
week in Los Angeles from
bullet wounds suffered in a
robbery, was active in the
operation of that city's free
clinic, and was honored for
that work.
Mr. Somberg, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Max (Belle) Som-
berg of Southfield, was a
volunteer at the Los Angeles
Free Clinic, of which he be-
came executive ,director in
1971. The Los Angeles City
Council cited him for his
accomplishments at the
clinic.
During his association
with the clinic, which serves
poor whites, blacks and
Chicanos, he helped get
funding for it and other free
clinics from the Department
of Health, Education and
Welfare. He was instrumen-
tal in obtaining a $175,000
grant from Los Angeles
County for the facility.
