NEW YORK — The na-
tion's 1,100 Reform rabbis
are conducting a fund-rais-
ing drive to establish an
"Alumni Chair" Endow-
ment in Practical Rabbinics
as their contribution to the
centennial celebration of
Hebrew Union College-Jew-
ish Institute of Religion.
Rabbi Harold Saperstein
of Temple Emanu-El of
Lynbrook, L.I., has been
named chairman of the
$600,000 campaign.
He succeeds Rabbi Ber-
tram W. Korn, who
launched the Alumni Chair
program which has to date
raised $165,000.

Egyptian Doctors
Leave Country

TUNIS (ZINS) — The
semi-official Egyptian
newspaper, Al Ahram, re-
ports a mass exodus of
Egyptian doctors from the
country.
According to the paper,
1,500 Egyptian doctors are
now in England; 1,000 are in
the United States; 2,000 are
in Saudi Arabia, 700 in Lib-
ya and 400 in Nigeria.
In addition, some 5,000
registered nurses and 2,000
medical technicians have
also chosen to practice their
professions in other coun-
tries.

to M.E. Soars

NEW YORK — Four Mi-
deast countries accounted
for almost $4.8 billion in
U.S. arms exports sales for
the first half of this year.
According to Aviation
Week, Iran spent $2.4 bil-
lion; Saudi Arabia, $1.15 bil-
lion; Israel, $861 million;
and Kuwait, $365 million.
The sales to Iran, Saudi
Arabia and Kuwait were
100 percent cash. Of Israel's
purchases, $17 million was
on a credit basis.
