"Tonight 37 years ago has
gone .down in history as
Kristallnacht or the Night
of the Crystals. This was the
night on Nov: 10, 1938 when
Hitler's Nazi storm troopers
launched a coordinated at-
tack on the Jewish commu-
nity in Germany . . . it was
the night which led to the
most terrifying holocaust in
the history of man."
The link with the infa-
mous Kristallnacht was
made by Israel's Ambassa-
dor Chiam Herzog Monday
prior to the vote in the gen-
eral assembly on the resolu-
tion which termed Zionism
"A form of racism and ra-
cial discrimination."
The resolution was
adopted after a 4 1/2 hour
debate by a 72-35 vote with
32 abstentions.

Herzog, in a speech
which traced the history of
Zionism, concluded by an-
grily tearing up the resolu-
tion, after declaring that
"For us, the Jewish Peo-
ple, this resolution based
on hatred, falsehood and
arrogance, is devoid of any
legal value. For us, the
Jewish people, this is no
more than a piece of paper_

The Israeli envoy de-
scribed Zionism as "the
name of the national move-
ment of the Jewish people

sion of the ancient Jewish
heritage. The Zionist ideal,
as set out in the Bible, has
been, and is, an integral
part of the Jewish Religion.
"Zionism is to the Jewish
people what the liberation
movements of Africa and
Asia have been to their own
people . . . Zionism is noth-

less — than the Jewish peo-
ple's sense of origin and des-

nally with its name."

UN Leaders
Deplore Vote

NEW YORK — In unpre-
cedented statements, both
United Nations Secretary
General Kurt Waldheim
and UN President Gaston
Thorn have made comments
about the resolution linking
Zionism with racism.
Waldheim deplored divi-
sevness in the world body,
and Thorn, of Luxemborg,
eclared that a climate of
conciliation cultivated in
recent months had "been de-
stroyed" and warned UN
members on the adverse
consequences.
He called the vote the
"unhappy product of pres-
sure by those who wanted to
impose a point of view
which is historically and
philosophically false."
