Knopf published Sakharov's
important new book "My
Country and the World."
Sakharov, who is interna-
tionally known for his role
in the development of the
Soviet hydrogen bomb, is
even more widely known
and respected for his role as
the most outspoken leader
of the human rights move-
ment- within the Soviet
Union. Since the exile of
Alexander Solzhenitsyn in
1974, Sakharov has emerged
as the leading political dis-
senter inside Russia.
Last year Knopf pub-
lished Sakharov's "Sakharov
Speaks," which focused on
the failings of the Soviet
system. In "My Country and
the World," he casts his crit-
icism in universal terms at
detente, and the dangers it
poses to the world's well-
being and to hopes for re-
form in the USSR.

The friendship of a fool is

Hadassah Hospital Reopens

MOSHE RON

Jewish News Special

JERUSALEM — The Ar-
abs try again and again to
destroy Israel's building and
development. But Israel
proves that it is capable to
rebuild and reconstruct de-
stroyed places and institu-
tions.
In the spring of 1948, a
few weeks before the an-
nouncement of the estab-
lishment of the Jewish State
in the Tel Aviv Museum by
David Ben-Gurion, a horri-
ble event occurred in belea-
gured Jerusalem. Seventy-
seven persons — scientists,
doctors, and nurses — who
went in a convoy from Jeru-
salem to the Hadassah Hos-
pital on Mount Scopus, were
murdered by an Arab gang.
After this attack, which
was carried out under the
British mandatory regime,
800 persons were left in the
hospital — sick people, doc-
tors, nurses and technical
personnel. After the cease-
fire with the Jordanian
Army, the sick people were
brought to Jerusalem.

The director of the Had-
assah hospital, Prof. Jacob
Mann expressed his hope,
that many Arab people will
come to this hospital from
neighboring Arab countries
and that the new hospital -
will turn into one of the
peace-bridges between Is-
rael and the Arab countries.

In the opening ceremony
of the new Hadassah hospi-
tal the President of Israel,
Prof. Ephraim Kaztir; Pre-
mier Yitzhak Rabin, mem-
bers of the government and
Knesset, scientists, and a
delegation of Hadassah
women from the U.S. took
part.

On this occasion the
widow of the late manager
of the Hadassah hospital
Dr. Haim Yasski who had
been killed in the convoy on
its way to the hospital, re-
lated some of her memories.

The new Hadassah hos-
pital will be the central
hospital for Eastern Jeru-
salem and serve foremost
Arab sick people. The per-
sonnel consists of Jews
and Arabs and the inten-
tion is to employ as many

After the Six Day War,
when the whole area of
Jerusalem including the
Mount Scopus, was freed,
the hospital was visited by
the women of Hadassah,
who had secured the
means to build and install
the hospital. They vowed
to do everything to recon-
struct and restore the hos-
pital.

The Hadassah women
have kept their promise. On
the ruins of the old Hadas-
sah hospital, a new and
modern hospital has opened
its doors on Mount Scopus.
The old central building of
the hospital, which was
opened in 1939, was restored
and new buildings built-up
and added.
