have yet eaten in this area
. . . creamy but with a solid
body . . . The rim and bot-
tom are made with a special
cookie dough . . . It is baked
without chemical additives
or preservatives and can be
frozen indefinitely without
any loss of flavor . . . The
Turf cheesecake at Irving's
is truly a gourmet delight.
OPENING OF PIPER'S
Alley Downtown was
preceded by ceremonies on
the corner of St. Antoine
and Lafayette, where the
new eatery is located . . . in
the Detroit Cornice and
Slate Building . . . Festivi-
ties unveiled a plaque desig-
nating the building as an of-
ficial state historical site
. . Everybody was happy
to get inside, though, away
from the chill . . . and it
was a conglomeration of all
woman and mankind that
enjoyed the interior warmth
of an open bar . . . Bumped
into Al Kaufman, 26 years
with the Detroit Times, the
last 18 as political editor,
and for the past 12 years
vice president in charge of
advertising for Blue Cross-
Blue Shield . . . Looks great
— younger than ever . . .
Piper's Alley Downtown,
now open, can boast of a
fine waitress lineup . . .
gals like Ilene Kell.
NEW EVENING man-
ager at the Golden Mush-
room on 10 Mile and South-
field . . . Russell Ross, was
formerly of a local north-
west gourmet spot, and
previous to that at the Sher-
aton in Caracas, Venezuela.
15 YEARS AGO, George
Young and the Youngsters
was started . . . Today, the
four exceptionally talented
gents will be honored at a
15th anniversary party . . .
8 p.m. Nov. 18 . . . at Mick-
ey's Pier 500 on Biddle in
Wyandotte, where the
group has been packing
them in with unlimited en-
tertainment for so long . .
Tickets for the shindig are
donations of $3 per person
. . . with proceeds going to
the mentally Retarded Chil-
dren of Michigan . . . Party
will have a buffet, guest
stars, and former
"Youngster" band members
. . . sounds like a lot of fun
. . . and the kind of thing
folks won't want to miss
. . . Word of advice, though
. . . Be sure and get your
tickets now or you'll never
get in.
DARBYS. . . on W.
Seven Mile and Wyoming
. . . an elegant, triple threat
restaurant that emerged as
one of Northwest Detroit's
most popular dining places
. . . Darbys opened its doors
in January, 1955, and,
like many good restaurants,
had a rough three-month
shakedown cruise before
smooth sailing began . . .
Sam Boesky, bearer of a
famous name in Detroit res-
taurant circles, was the
proprietor of Darbys . . . It
was his conception that a
really fine place to eat
should have something for
everybody and in Darbys he
accomplished his goal . . .

the place was that they had
a small lunch counter for
the quick coffee and sand-
wich set, a coffee shop for
those with a little more
time, and a really beautiful
dining room for sumptuous
dining . . . In addition,
there was the Sky Lounge
and Dining Room which
was strictly stag quarters at
noon or available for private
parties . . . Nestled off in
one corner was a delicates-
sen shop specializing in de-
lightful Jewish-style foods
and beautifully packaged
gift boxes . . . As
previously mentioned in
another item, Darbys sat
350 persons and did a "land
office" business most of the
time . . . frequently serving
as many as 2,000 meals a
day during lunch, dinner
and supper . . . It gained
prominence as a place to
meet and see other people,
but the food was incom-
parable . . . with such
dishes as cabbage, flanken,
white fish, chicken papri-
kash, gefilte fish, pickled
fish, good old reliable roast
prime ribs, steaks plus
oodles of other goodies .. .
And you could rest assured
that the meats served at
Darbys were really first
rate, top drawer . . . With
one or other of his several
brothers and independently.
Sam Boesky had been in the
restaurant business since
1917 . . . His first place was
at Hastings and Farns-
worth, then he moved to
Griswold and was a partner
for many years at Boeskys
at 12th and Hazelwood . . .
He went it alone at Darbys
however.
WE'VE HEARD OF peo-
ple being in a hurry to get
into Jakks . . . but this is
too much . . . and thankful
that nobody was hurt . . .
Car driven by Julius Asher
went into parking space . . .
and kept right on going
through Jakks dining room
. . . No doubt thought his
foot was on the brake but
was down on the accelerator
instead . . . Jakks on
Greenfield and 10 Mile, is
closed temporarily.
