Council Protests
Voting on Sabbath

In response to a letter
from the Jewish Commu-
nity Council of Metropolitan
Detroit and the Greater
Detroit Area Seventh Day
Adventist District, the City
of Detroit Neighborhood
Advisory Council elections
scheduled for Nov. 15 have
been postponed.
Writing to the Detroit
Neighborhood Services De-
partment, Alvin L. Kush-
ner, Jewish Community
Council executive director,
and Elder Bruce Babienco,
Seventh Day Adventist dis-
trict leader, expressed their
concern "about the infringe-
ment of religious freedom
and voting rights that this
election will present to Sab-
bath observing Jews and
Seventh Day Adventists."
Meanwhile, in a state-
ment delivered Oct. 29 in
cooperation with the Metro-
politan Detroit Welfare Re-
form Coalition, Mrs. Ma-
tilda Rubin, chairman of the
Community Relations Com-
mittee of the Jewish Com-
munity Council decried the
proposed cuts in payments
to welfare recipients as a
mechanism to balance Mich-
igan's budget.
Governor Milliken has
proposed that $56,987,450
be slashed from the
State Department of Social
Services budget. This cut is
approximately 38 percent of
the total of proposed budget
cuts for the state of Michi-
gan.
