BACK IN 1952, Red Buttons, who appears this Sunday
at the Detroit Businessmen's Group, City of Hope Dinner-
Dance at Raleigh House, launched "The Red Buttons Show"
on television, which ran for three seasons to top ratings . . .
Some of his lines such as "Strange things are happening"
entered the idiom of time and he won a Michael Award
(later renamed "Emmy") as the best comedian in 1953 . .
Red also has an Academy Award for his performance in the
movie "Sayonara" . . . But it wasn't all roses for Red, who
has become a stage, television and movie household name
. . . As a kid growing up, he used to sing on street corners
in the Bronx . . . and his career really began when he was
hired as a singing bellhop tons on his uniform com-
at Dinty Moore's City Island bined with his red hair gave
Tavern . . . The shiny
him the nickname, which
became a permanent change
from Aaron Schwatt . . .
On weekends, while attend-
ing high school, he looked
for jobs as a comic emcee
. . . On one occasion, Red
unknowingly officiated at a
Nazi Bund rally . . . they
didn't know he was Jewish
either.

in a local newspaper item
. . . says A. S. Kyriakopo-
poulous, better known as
Tony Keros, bossman at the
Athens Souvlaki eatery in

.Laliser . . . In Greece, says
Tony, souvlaki is a sand-
wich made with lamb, ei-
ther gyros or pieces as on
shish kebob . . . The gyros
(souvlaki) sandwich he
serves is made with bar-b-q
lamb from a stand-up rotis-
