Israel Relations
After Comments

VIENNA — Austrian
Chancellor Bruno Kreisky
Monday tried to patch up re-
lations with Israel by ex-
plaining a recent remark
that there was no "Jewish
people."
Kreisky, who is Jewish
but practices no religion,
met with Israeli Ambassa-
dor Avigdor Dagan after
Israel asked for a clarifica-
tion of Kreisky's reit-lark.
Kreisky accused Nazi-
hunter Simon Wiesenthal
two weeks ago of trying to
bring him down after Wie-
senthal reported he had
evidence that Freidrich
Peter of Austria's Free-
dom Party had been a
member of an SS unit that
Killed Russian Jews dur-
ing World War II.
Peter was reported to
have political ties with
Kreisky, and during his at-
tack on Wiesenthal Kreisky
said, "There exists no Jew-
ish people, only a commu-
nity of faith which became a
community of fate."

p.m. Nov. 10. On Nov. 14 at
8:30 p.m., Rabbi Wine will
discuss "Hutzpah," as it re-
lates to authors, Erica Jong
and Esther Broner.
The Piccolo Opera Com-
pany will present its origi-
nal production of "The Wise
Men of Chelm" 8 p.m. Nov.
23. Tickets are available at
the temple office.

CLUB will have a social 8
p.m. Sunday in the syn-
agogue. Congressman Wil-

fall seminar series on "The
Detroit Jewish Community:
Evolving Values and Priori-
ties, - beginning 8:15 p.m.
Monday in the synagogue.
On Monday, Asher Til-
chin will moderate a panel
who will discuss "Federa-
tions and Synagogues — In
Pursuit of Unity." Panelists
will include William
Avrunin, executive vice
president of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit; Robert
Steinberg, vice president of
the Jewish Home for the
Aged and a board member
of Federation; and George
M. Zeltzer, vice president of
Federation.

"Community Schools,
Day Schools, Synagogue
Schools — Jewish Educa-
tion in Detroit" will be the
topic of the Nov. 10 meeting.

organized by the syn-
agogue's adult study com-
mission, headed by Dr.
Harry Maisel. The public is
invited, and refreshments
will be served following each

Tay-Sachs Screening Slated

Three principals in plan-
ning the next Tay-Sachs
Screening, slated 9 a.m.-4
p.m. Nov. 16 at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek are Mrs.
Leonard Baron, Mrs. Alfred
E. Lakin and Mrs. Marvin
Fleishman.
Mrs. Lakin is chairman of
volunteers for the Tay-
Sachs Screening Program of
Metropolitan Detroit. Mes-
dames Baron and Fleish-
man are co-chairing the pro-
gram for the synagogue
which has volunteered to
host the screening.

This will be the fourth
community-wide screen-
ing to date in an effort to
uncover possible carriers
of the Tay-Sachs disease,
which afflicts babies born
to Jewish couples of East-
ern and Central European
heritage when both par-
ents carry the gene.

More than 2,700 men and
women have been screened

A donation is requested in
order to defray expenses
and perpetuate the pro-
gram, but no one will be

Borowitz to Be Temple
Guest This Weekend

Rabbi Eugene B. Borow-
itz, professor of education
and Jewish religious
thought at the New York
campus of Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion, will be scholar-in-
residence this weekend at
Temple Israel.
Rabbi Borowitz will be
guest speaker at Sabbath
Services 8:30 p.m. today.
His subject is "The New
Quest for Jewish Identity."
He will address a leader-
ship luncheon noon Satur-
day in the temple on, "The
New Search for Jewish Be-
lief."

Regarded as one of
American Jewry's leading
thinkers, Rabbi Borowitz
is founder and editor of the
trans-denominational
magazine, Sh'ma, a jour-
nal of social ethics.

Reform Assembly

UNEF Mandate Is Extended

UNITED
NATIONS
(JTA) — The United Na-
tions Security Council ap-
proved Oct. 23 a resolution
to extend the mandate of
the United Nations Emer-
gency Force in the Sinai for
one year.
The vote was in line with
a clause in the second Sinai
interim accord specifying
renewal annually for a pe-
riod of three years. The vote
was 13-0 with China and
Iraq abstaining, the usual
pattern of voting by the
Council on the UNEF man-
date.
The vote was the first
time that the current UNEF
contingent had had its man-
date extended for a full
year.

He has written exten-
sivel.y for leading academic
journals and his fifth book,
"The Masks Jews Wear,"
received the National Jew-
ish Book Award in 1974.
Rabbi Borowitz also will
speak 9 a.m. Sunday at an
area-wide Religious School
Teachers Institute at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek. He will
speak on "Alternate Meth-
ods for Deepening Jewish
Commitment."

New inspirations mark
evidences of revived spirit-
ual involvements by older
citizens who have missed
being confirmed into the
Jewish faith and are craving
for Bar Mitzva.

The newest in these ranks
is Bernard Steinberg, 41, of
Oak Park, who will be called
to the Torah Saturday
morning at the Lubavitch
Center.

Steinberg is a member of
a Tuesday night adult edu-
cation class taught by Rabbi
Moshe Polter. A kidush will
