He resided in Detroit in the latter part of the 1760's. Joseph Lang, Martin Hersh and Sarah Silverman were the first known Jewish children to be born in De- troit (1849). Sarah Cousin was the first prominent Jewish woman resident of Detroit. She is the legendary foun- der of Cong. Beth El. Samuel Marcus was De- troit's first rabbi. He was also a hazan and a shokhet. Jacob Lang, a founder of Beth El, was Detroit's first Jewish blacksmith. David Emil Heineman was the first historiogra- pher of the Detroit and Michigan Jewish commu- nity.
