JNF Land Projects
Detailed in Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Arye Bar Kol, director of
the Jewish National Fund's
land development depart-
ment, explained to news-
men here how the JNF car-
ries out its land reclamation
and development work on
more than 500 sites from
the Sinai to the Golan
Heights.
This year's budget for the
land development depart-
ment amounts to IL 150 mil-
lion, of which 25 percent is
derived from contributions
and a matching amount
from the Jewish Agency's
settlement department.
Fifty percent of the
budget is supplied by gov-
ernment ministries which
order certain projects. But
the IL 65 million budget for
the JNF's afforestation
work comes entirely from
private contributions, Bar
Kol said.

London Paper Says
Romania Selling
Exit Visas to Jews

LONDON (ZINS) — Offi-
cial Jewish sources have
never formally denied an
allegation which has now
been publicly reported by
the British journalist Chap-
man Pintcher of the Daily
Express wherein he states
that the government of Ro-
mania has made a business
of selling exit permits to
Jews planning emigration to
Israel.
AcCording to the report,
the Jewish authorities have
to pay the sum of "between
500 to 1,000 dollars" for ev-
ery Jew permitted to leave
to country. In other words,
the newsman says, Jews
have become one of Roman-
ia's leading export items
producing revenues aggre-
gating tens of millions of
dollars.

Kissinger, Sharon
Pass 'Greetings'

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Reliable sources report that
at one of his meetings with
Secretary of State Dr.
Henry Kissinger, Prime
Minister Rabin introduced
General "Arik" Sharon.
Kissinger -quipped: "Aha,
here is the most dangerous
man in the Middle East."
General Sharon, known to
be a bitter opponent of the
latest agreement with
Egypt, kept his cool and did
not react to Kissinger's re-
mark.
Several weeks before thiS
incident, Sharon had char-
acterized Kissinger as "the
most dangerous person for
Israel in the American gov-
ernment."

New Settlers
Move Into Yamit

JERUSALEM — During
the past few months, the
first settlers of the new de-
sert town, Yamit, have been
moving into their new
homes.
Moving into the desert
town has been made easier
on the settlers by the trees
planted by the Jewish Na-
tional Fund last summer to
check sand dunes, stop irri-
tating flying sands and
provide shade and cool air
for the town and its people.
Yamit is only one of sev-
eral projects wherein trees
were transferred by the
JNF to desert settlements
and towns.

Robert St. John Advises Arab
Students on Zionist Truths

Robert St. John, eminent
authority on the Middle
East and noted author
whose books include the bi-
ography of Gamal Abdel
Nasser ("The Boss"), on
Wednesday met with a
grobp of Arab students and
enlightened them on the
truth and ideology of Zion-
ism.
Here on Thursday to ad-
dress Bnai Brith Women at
Kn011wood Country Club,
St. John also spoke,
Wednesday, at Henry Ford
Community College • in
Dearborn. There he met
with the Arab students who
questioned him on the Zion-
ist idea and Israel.
The discussion began dur-
ing and after his lecture and
was continued for nearly
two hours privately with the
Arab students.

St. John states that he
was greatly surprised to
learn that the Arab stu-
dents believed Zionism to
be something mystical,
secretive. They had no
idea of the libertarian
background, the quest for
a homeland, the aspiration
for an end to oppression.

HIAS Cites Nun
as.
of Year

NEW YORK — In recog-
nition of her efforts on be-
half of Soviet Jewry, Sister
Rose Thering was named
woman of the year by the
women's division of United
HIAS service, the world-
wide Jewish migration
agency.
"Sister Rose has long
been among the most out-
spoken and concerned
Christian clergy on behalf
of Soviet Jewry and the
cause of human freedom,"
said Beth Ellerin, women's
division president. An asso-
ciate professor of education
at Seton University in South
Orange, N. J., Sister Rose is
a pioneer in the field of
Christian-Jewish relations
and has visited Israel sev-
eral times.
She is a member.of the In-
ter-Religious Task Force for
Soviet Jewry, National
Catholic Conference for In-
terracial Justice and Ameri-
can Professors for Peace in
the Middle East.

JWB Donates
Scholarship Funds

NEW YORK — Scholar-
ship and fellowship grants
worth $87,150 have made it
possible for 43 students —
all of them future staff
members of Jewish Commu-
nity Centers and YM &
YWHAs — to enroll in pro-
fessional graduate courses
in colleges and universities
this year.
The Jewish Welfare
Board counsels qualified
applicants, awards scholar-
ships, maintains liaison
with schools of professional
education, and coordinates
regional and national train-
ing programs. Funding for
the awards was provided by
the JWB, and in some cases
by local Jewish federations.

The students, most of
them Christian Arabs,
were, in the main ready to
learn from the guidance he
offered them, St. John re-
ported.

Jews, Catholics
Most Educated
and Wealthiest

CHICAGO — The Na-
tional Opinion Research
Center here reported as a
result of a recent analysis
that Jews and Irish Catho-
lics are the wealthiest reli-
gious-ethnic groups in
America and also have the
most years of education.
The object of the study,
made for the Ford Founda-
tion, was conducted to de-
termine to what extent im-
migrant groups that have
come to the U.S. since the
Revolutionary War have
succeeded educationally and
economically through op-
portunities provided in
American society as it
marks its 200th anniver-
sary.
Findings were based on a
sample of 18,000 Americans
put together from 12 na-
tional surveys. The study
was carried out by a re-
search team headed by the
Rev. Andrew Greeley, a
Catholic priest.

Devaluation Rumor
Spurs Money Panic

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Ru-
mors of a new major deval-
uation of the Israel pound
created panic on the unoffi-
cial exchanges trading in
dollars and gold. The spate
of rumors stemmed from an
analysis by economists that
the government will never
succeed in covering its defi-
cit unless there is a radical
devaluation of the currency
to the level of approximately
10 pounds to the dollar.
These reports drove the
price of the pound down to a
point where it was trading
on the black market at IL
9.50 to $1. .

Reform Kibutz
in Israel Planned

WARWICK, N.Y. — A
group of 14 college-age Re-
form Jewish youth have
agreed to assist in the estab-
lishment of the first Reform
kibutz in Israel and will
emigrate there during the
next two years.
At a meeting held by the
National Federation of
Temple Youth, an affiliate
of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, the
young people formed them-
selves as "Garina Arava"
(the people of Arava). They
will join with 70 graduates
of the Israeli Movement for
Progressive Judaism.
The new Reform kibutz,
the first such project to be
based on a liberal-Jewish
alternative life-style, will be-
located in the Arava desert,
30 miles north of the city of
Mat. The kibutz is slated
for actual settlement in the
summer of 1977.
