Yiddish Music Expert and Kabala Talk Set For 24th Annual Book Fair

Yiddish music authority
Ruth Rubin, and a Detro-
iter, Rabbi Lawrence Kush-
ner, who will lecture on

8:30 p.m. Nov. 8, will be Is-
rael's Ambassador to the
United Nations Chaim Her-
zog, author of the recent
best seller "War of Atone-
ment: October 1973."
Gen. Herzog's topic will
be "Israel and the United
Nations."
All of the Book Fair
events are open to the pub-
lic. For information, or res-

"Voice of A People," Ruth
Rubin sings folk songs in
English, German, French,
Italian, Hebrew, and other
languages, but her forte is
the Yiddish folksong.
She has collected and rec-
orded Yiddish folk songs for
20 years.

She was asked to come
to Israel by the Haifa Mu-
sic Museum and AMLI
Library for the inaugura-
tion of the Ruth Rubin
Archive of Yiddish Folk-
song. This archive pos-
sesses more than 1,500
songs collected and rec-
orded personally in nu-
merous countries.

She was twice selected

tional Folk Music Council.
The mystical and ancient
Jewish Kabala is the topic
of Rabbi Lawrence Kush-
ner, 10 a.m. Nov. 13. He is
author of "The Book of Let-
ters," and his appearance is
being co-sponsored by
United Hebrew School
Women's Auxiliary and Hil-
lel Day School PTO.
A continental breakfast
will precede the lecture.
There is a charge for the
breakfast and reservations
are required.
Rabbi Kushner was born
in Detroit in 1943. As a
child, he studied art and
still does Hebrew calligra-
phy.

At the Hebrew Union
College, he studied rab-
binic theology under Ja-
kob Petuchowski, and
served as editor of
"Variant," the student
magazine.

In 1971, he accepted his
present pulpit at Congrega-
tion Beth El of Sudbury,
Mass.
Rabbi Jack Riemer and
novelist Zelda Popkin will
also make appearances dur-
ing the week of Book Fair,
Nov. 8-16.
Rabbi Riemer will speak
at 8 p.m. Nov. 13 on
"Wisdom For The End Of
Life: Whenever It May Be."
His visit is co-sponsored by
the Michigan Jewish Young
Adult Council.

In his "Jewish Reflec-
tions on Death," Rabbi
Riemer brings together for
the first time a wide-rang-
ing group of essays which
deal with Jewish thought
on death.

Rabbi Riemer is rabbi of
the Beth Abraham Syn-
agogue of Dayton and pro-
fessor of Jewish studies at
the University of Dayton.
Zelda Popkin, author of
the recent best-seller, "Dear
Once," will speak on "Who
Are We — Where Did We
Come From — And Where
Are We Going?" at 1p.m
Nov. 13 in a talk co-spon-
sored by the Greater Detroit

TO-ELECT TRUSTEES
AT ANNUAL MEETING

The nominating committee of the board of trustees of
Sinai Hospital of Detroit will present eight names for
election at the annual meeting of the corporation Mon-
day, November 17, at 8 p.m., in the Zuckerman
Auditorium.

Nominated for five-year terms ending December 1,
1980: Mandell L. Berman (for a first term) ; Alfred 1.
Deutsch, Samuel Frankel, Irwin Green, Joseph H. iodic-
ier, Justice Charles L. Levin, Max Weinberg, and Harold
Weisberg (the latter seven for re-election).

According to Article VII, Section 2 of the hospital's
corporate by-laws: "Nominations of persons as candi-
dates for trustees may also be made by not less than
fifty (50) members of the Special Membership Class of
the corporation who shall certify to the secretary in writ-
ing the names of their nominees at least ten (10) days
before the annual meeting of such members of the
corporation."
The nominating committee is chaired by Nate S.
Shapero.
Lawrence Weiner, Ph.D., Deputy Dean and Professor
of Immunology and Microbiology, Wayne State Univer-
sity School of Medicine, will be the featured speaker.
He will discuss "Medical Education — Wayne Univer-
sity/Sinai Style".
Harry C. Saltzstein, M.D., will be honored on the oc-
casion of his 85th birthday in recognition of his leader-
ship role as a founder of Sinai Hospital.
There will be a salute to United Jewish Charities for
its 75th anniversary, and to the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
