Encyclopaedia Judaica,
the major literary achieve-
ment of this generation, has
acquired an equally signifi-
cant supplementary ency-
clopedic work for children.
Keter Publishing House
of Jerusalem, the producers
of Encyclopaedia Judaica,
have just issued a six-vol-
ume compendium, entitled
"My Jewish World," which

becomes a major need in
every schoolroom and every
school and synagogue li-
brary.
There is no longer excuse
for misinformation about
Jews, their history, their
great personalities, their
traditions and ethical codes
— with such vast informa-
tion made available in the
simplest terms.

Factual, prepared with
the utmost care, the ency-
clopedia for youth was tac-
kled for realities, for au-
thoritativeness in defining
and recording Jewish ex-
perience through the ages.

Dr. Posner addresses
himself to the reader with
this explanatory introduc-
tory message:
" 'My Jewish World' is a
book for continuous reading
as much as it is a reference
book. In it you will find en-
tries on all the important
concepts and ideas of Juda-
ism, on all the festivals of
the Jewish calendar, on all
the great events of Jewish
history, on hundreds of
great Jews who have made
significant contributions to
their people and to the
world at large, and on the
countries, cities and towns
that have special meaning
for the Jewish people.
"In addition you will find
out how other religions and

cultures have acted towards
the Jews and what Judaism
thinks about them. 'My Jew-
ish World' is just what its
name says it is — a descrip-
tion of the Jewish world in
the past and the present.
You can read 'My Jewish
World' from beginning to
end, or you can just open it
and browse at random. You
can also use it as an aid in
your studies; to find out
more about the things you
study at school.

"The information in 'My
Jewish World' is taken
from and based upon the
incomparable treasurer of
Jewish knowledge that
was assembled to create
the monumental Encyclo-
paedia Judaica that was
published in Jerusalem in
1972. That work, written
by the greatest scholars in
their fields, has been dis-
tilled and reshaped for you
by an expert staff under
the supervision of the edi-
torial board of the Ency-
clopaedia Judaica."

Excellent judgment was
used by Dr. Posner in ap-
pending a complete index to
his collected work, and this
serves as a simplification in
finding items researched.
At the same time, the
glossary explains Hebrew
and foreign words, and such
definitions, as part of the in-

serves as the Encyclopaedia
Judaica's similar work for
youth.
Excellently edited by Dr.
Raphael Posner, this im-
pressive supplement pro-
vides access to Jewish
knowledge for the young.
While there were previously
two other full-scale Jewish
encyclopedias, this is the
first time that a totality of
Jewish knowledge is pro-
vided for youth in an ency-
clopedia of more than one
volume. The previous one-
volume encyclopedias for
the young were skeletons
compared with the immens-
ity of the current product.

Dr. Posner, as editor-in-
chief of this work, has
helped make available for
the young Jewish student
and for the interested
youth the acquisition of
information about every
conceivable Jewish sub-
ject.

JERUSALEM — There
was standing-room only
during a recent public de-
bate on the plans for the
Mamilla Development Pro-
ject.
Mamilla, the seam be-
tween the Old City and the
new, encompasses an area
that once was the spot
where Jerusalem was di-
vided by a wall for 19 years
(1948-67). A perfect example
of lack of urban planning,
the Mamilla district deterio-
rated into a slum — a scene
of delapidated, poor, out-
dated housing, cluttered
with small workshops, in-
dustries and warehouses.
Even after the reunifica-
tion of the city in 1967,
when the security wall came
down, the shabby condition
of this neighborhood
created a natural barrier be-
tween the prestigious resi-
dential areas in the new city
of Jerusalem and the Old
City.

To make this former
border area into a living
bridge between the Old
City and the new, the Je-
rusalem city planners, to-
gether with KARTA
(Central Jerusalem Devel-
opment Co.) and architects
Moshe Safdie and Gilbert
Weil had to find solutions

consistent with the eco-
nomic, social and architec-
tural goals of Jerusalem.

The height of the build-
ings had to be limited to
eight stories — in order not
to rise above the wall of the
Old City. A solution had to
be found to the problems of
pollution, traffic congestion
and parking at the Jaffa
Gate area, which would give
preference to pedestrians
and green, open area.
Restoring the structure of
the ground will provide two
slopes for terraced build-
ings: one slope for hotels, of-
fices and administrative
buildings, and the other
slope for a residential area.
The center of the valley
would become an open green
area with pools, linking In-
dependence Park and the Je-
rusalem Park.
All motor traffic would be
underground, as well as
parking facilities for vehi-
cles. An underground shop-
ping center would link the
Central Business District
with the market in the Old
City.
At the public discussion
of the plan, some basic ques-
tions were raised about
planning policy in this his-
toric and holy city. Should
not Jerusalem follow the
trend among many modern
urban planners — to ban
private vehicles altogether
from the area and provide
instead a modern public
transit system, or should
business be decentralized
from the town center to the
outskirts of the city?

dex, lend power to a strong
work that fills an immense
need.
Libraries already en-
riched with the Encyclopae-
dia Judaica will be addition-
ally enhanced with the
addition of "My Jewish
World." Together they form
a great treasure for home,
school and library.
