BJE Helps Distribute Kosher Food to NY Elderly, Young
_JEW YORK — For many
jiildren in Jewish schools,
lunches they receive rep-
sent their only hot meal of
the day. For senior citizens
struggling on fixed incomes,
and for small children of
working parents in day care
centers, lunch has become
the nutritional focal point of
the day's meals.
The Board of Jewish Edu-
cation of Greater New York,
through its division of
school food services, enabled
more than 8 million such
nutritionally balanced
lunches to be served this
past year via its programs of
channeling funds and dollar
value commodities through
the U.S. Department of
now is the time
to start thinking
of the ideal
gift for
Agriculture.
BJE is now the sole distri-
bution source for USDA
government-donated kosher
meat, poultry and cheese to
all of the Jewish schools in
Greater New York, as well
as senior citizen and day
care centers.
The benefits to partici-
pating schools and centers
are evidenced not only in
the upgrading of the qual-
ity of meals they are able
to offer, but in the cost
savings they achieve
thanks to centralized pur-
chasing and distribution
through BJE.

NEW YORK — In observ-
ance of the American Bicen-
tennial, the sixth annual Ye-
diat Israel (Knowledge of
Israel) program will include
study materials dealing
with the role of America in
the story of Palestine-Israel
during the last 200 years, in-
cluding the establishment of
the state of Israel.
The Yediat Israel Pro-
gram sponsored by the
dents are a breakfast pro-
gram, national school lunch
program and milk program.
In addition, the division of
school food services works
through the USDA to pro-
vide USDA donated com-
modities, and dollar value
savings on centrally pur-
chased commodities.
The work of the school
food service division extends
beyond the channeling of
cash and commodities. An
important facet of BJE's
work in this area is in nutri-
tion education, and a series
of in-service courses, work-
shops and seminars for
school lunch personnel are
conducted to keep them
abreast of the latest ad-
vances in the field.

Detroit's Travelling Rabbi
By SAMUEL SILVER
A Seven Arts Feature
During World War II,
hundreds of non-ordained
servicemen led congrega-
tions where chaplains were
not on hand. The saga of
these voluntary rabbis
would make as fascinating a
book as does the chronicle of
what rabbis in uniform ac-
complished.
An extraordinary layman
who has been serving as a
rabbi is Charles Goldstein,
of Detroit. A first-class at-
torney, Goldstein is a friend
of Dr. Leon Fram of De-
troit's Temple Israel.
For 20 successive years
Goldstein has been the act-
ing rabbi of Temple Bnai Is-
rael in Monroe. Each Sab-
bath and holiday Goldstein
makes the journey to Mon-
roe.
His sermons are avail-
able by writing to him at
810 Penobscot Bldg., Detroit
48226.
