During the Stalin era,
Kantorovich's unique ideas
were considered "insane"
and he worked at a Siberian
institute for many years,
even though his work was

the Nobel Peace Prize last

Dr. Kantorovich, who is
Jewish, is described as con-
troversial in the Soviet
Union at times for his unor-
thodox economic ideas,
based heavily on mathemat-
ics rather than Marxism.
Kantorovich will share
the prize with Dutch-born
American Tjalling Koop-
mans for "their contribu-
tions to the theory of opti-
mum allocation of
resources."

Their work embraced
national economies, as
well as helping individual
corporations and even de-
partments, although they
worked independently of
each other.

Practical applications of
their theories include more
efficient transportation,
warehousing and storage,
and how to assign men to
machines. Kantorovich won

TEL AVIV . (JTA) —
Andrei Sakharov, the dis-
sident Soviet scientist who
won the 1975 Nobel Peace
Prize last week, expressed
admiration for those Soviet
Jews who have emigrated to
Israel. In a telephone inter-
view from Moscow on Israel
Radio, he said: "These peo-
ple have left our homeland
but many strings connect
them still to this country."
He said he regarded the
prize as an acknowledge-
ment "not only of myself,
but all those fighting for
their rights in the Soviet
Union . . . those in prison
and labor camps." Asked
about Soviet immigrants to
Israel, Sakharov declared: "I
have great admiration for
the people who reached Is-
rael and built a new life in
their homeland. I send them
my very best wishes."

Sporty on the outside, but
completely lined and
magnificently tailored for
greater comfort and better
fit. This leisure look is

stitched accents. Sizes
