The citation accompany-

Chaplain Sobel notes that it
was given "for exceptionally
meritorious conduct in the
performance of outstanding
service from July 1973
through August 1975" while
serving as the Chaplain,
U.S. Marine Corps.

In his position, Chaplain
Sobel was responsible for
the supervision of 200 chap-
lains of all faiths in the
Marines. Chaplain Sobel
was the first rabbi to be
commissioned as a chaplain
in the regular U.S. Navy
Chaplains Corps.

He received his ecclesiast-
ical endorsement from the
Jewish Welfare Board. Dur-
ing the Korean War, he
served with the 1st Marine
Division and earned the
Purple Heart and the
Bronze Star Medal.
