Fitzgerald's `Tycoon' to Be Film By HERBERT G. LUFT (Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.) HOLLYWOOD — Sam Spiegel, who has not made a picture since "Nicholas and Alexandra" was shot in England and Spain through- out 1970 and 1971, has re- turned to Hollywood for the production of "The Last Tycoon," filmization of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of the 1930s dealing with the movie industry at that time. The screen play for Spiegel's epic has been written by Harold Pinter. Elia Kazan makes his come-back as the director of the film. Robert , de Niro, of "Godfather Part II," is set to portray the central charac- ter of Monroe Stahr, a ficti- tious production head with some traits of the late Irving Thalberg; Robert Mitchum is the powerful studio exec- utive, Pat Brady; Jack Ni- cholson, a young screen writer who fights for the rights of his craft; and Don- ald Pleasence, an English novelist imported to Holly- wood. Others in the cast are Angelica Huston (daughter of John), Tony Curtis, and Jeanne Moreau, the latter making her Hollywood de- but. Sydney Pollack who guided the successful Bar- bra Streisand film, "The Way We Were," now pres- ents to us "Three Days of the Condor," with Robert Redford as the central char- acter, the epitome of the naive young American, an inept idealist who has served the Central Intellig- ence Agency in a minor po- sition until hell broke loose around him with the unex- plainable murder of almost a dozen people. Thus a dream that began a year ago, of a town in the dunes, became a reality. Before planning the city, the Jewish National Fund was on the site to check out the area. The JNF Afforestation Department also went into action planting trees to an- chor the sands. Over 350 dunams have already been reclaimed for the more than 160 housing units in the dif- ferent stages of completion. JNF is planting acacia and tamarisk trees in a tight circle around the set- tlement to stop the moving sands.
