Helprin's Poignant 'Dove of the East'
A collection of poignant
short stories offers an un-
usual experience for the
reader who explores Mark
Helprin's first book, "A
Dove of the East and Other
Stories" (Knopf).
The book, containing 20
stories, takes the reader
from ancient times to the
20th Century Helprin
writes about an interesting

Unlike many collections
of short stories, the reader
is not tempted to skim
through the pages and only
read a few of the stories. In-
stead, one is immediately
involved in the various per-
sonalities and their joys and
problems.

Helprin's characters are
full of love. The men and
women are clearly seen as
strong people. Variety is
the key to Helprin's writ-
ing, and it makes for en-
joyable reading.
"A Jew of Persia" tells of
an aged Jew from the Per-
sian mountains, an authen-
tic folk tale set in the 20th
Century. In another story,
Helprin writes about a man
and woman meeting and
parting one afternoon in
Maine.
"They stood, she sun-
burnt, lighted, and dizzy,
yet calm. He left her in that
place, that island on the
Maine coast, never to see her
again."

The most touching
story is also the title of the
entire collection, "A Dove
of the East."
An Israeli on patrol
comes upon a wounded dove.
In his decision to stay with
the dove, the soldier risks
the safety and respect of his
comrades.
"The gentleness of a dove
is something we cannot un-
derstand. Sometimes a
fighter, it is not all of one
color.
"But most of all it is
moved by quiet love and a
wish for simple life among
the trees. And when it dies
it breaks us apart, for it
never thinks of itself.
"But God protect it if it
should die alone, and God
protect its poor family."

Helprin's stories, which
move from culture to cul-
ture, probably stems from
his own experiences. Born in
1947, he grew up in New
York City, the Hudson River
Valley and the British West
Indies.
"A Dove of the East and
Other Stories" offers a
worthwhile reading experi-
ence and is highly recom-
mended.

Soviet Influence `Declining / in M .E.
NEW YORK (ZINS) —
New York Times corre-
spondent James Markham,
stationed in Beirut, writes
about the decline of Soviet
influence in the Arab world.
The journalist calls atten-
tion to the following facts:
Egyptian President Sadat
has frequently accused Mos-
cow of trying to disrupt
Arab unity. Iraq, which con-
cluded a treaty of friendship
with the Soviets in 1972, is
now extending its trade
with America and Europe.
Syria, which is still
largely dependent on the
Russians for arms ship-
ments, is now in a much bet-
ter position to pursue an
independent policy, thanks
to the financial help it is
receiving from Saudi Ara-
bia.
Syria is now buying
commercial aircraft in the
United States and has
signed an agreement with
an American firm to ex-
plore for oil. At the same

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Officials of the federal Bu-

Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
to suggest means by which
the bureau could provide
kosher foods to Jews in fed-

the bureau as administra-

The invitation was made
during a meeting at the bu-
reau attended by Rabbi
David Cohen. UOJCA na-
tional director, and Rabbi
Elkanah Schwartz, public
affairs director. The rabbis
had sought a meeting with
Norman Carlson, director of
the bureau, after the issue
was raised in federal court
in behalf of Rabbi Meir
Kahane, founder of the Jew-
ish Defense League, and for
JDL members Richard Huss
and Jeffrey Smilow, all
serving prison terms.
The National Jewish
Commission on Law and
Public Affairs is represent-
ing Huss and Smilow in le-
gal action seeking to assure
them kosher food, currently
not available in any federal
prison. The federal courts
are divided on whether
kosher food must be sup-
plied under federal law.
