New waves of hope and
confidence flowed into every
home throughout the length
and breadth of the world in
which the heritage and trad-
itions of the Jewish people
were still cherished and pre-
served.
Jewish history will for-
ever be dominated by this
fantastic transition from
tragedy to triumph, from
the depths of misery and
suffering to new heights of
sovereign pride. The
emergence of Israel is the
answer of historical des-
tiny to the Nazi design for
Jewish extinction.
Jews who fought against
Hitler, whether under the
flag of the Jewish Brigade
— the first augury of a sov-
ereign Israeli army, or in
the armies of the Allied
Nations who came together
for the destruction of the
Nazi plague, have a special
duty to keep these memo-
ries alive.
There is a deep underly-
ing logic in the reunion,
after 30 years, of Jews who
fought against Hitler. Em-
pit-es 'rise and fall, but there
is no assurance that the de-
feat of one tyranny will for-
ever prevent its recurrence
in different form or degree.
Fundamental human
rights and freedoms still
need vigilant protection.
The poison of anti-Jewish
prejudice has still not been
stamped out. Above all Is-
rael, Jewish history's deci-
sive answer to Hitler; the
home, arena and sanctuary
of Jewish creativity has
lived all its life embattled,
without knowing a single
consecutive month of per-
fect peace.
It is, therefore no mere
nostalgia that will bring to-
gether the veterans of the
anti-Hitler war. It is both a
covenant of memory and a
pledge to keep the fight
going, to labor, to struggle,
to defend, to resist until a
world is established in
which all vestiges of Hitler-
ite tyranny will seem incre-
dible to succeeding genera-
tions of mankind.
