ter Aharon Yadlin, a former
president himself of the
Football (Soccer) Associa-
tion, is rather reluctant to
hand down any directive
concerning the future con-
duct of the sport.
During the past few
weeks Yadlin has made a
keen study of the recom-
mendations and the find-
ings of three committees
and has met with members
of these committees, includ -
ing the Knesset Sports Com-
mittee, which he appointed,
and also the Histadrut Corn-
mittee, as well as members
of the Football Association
itself.
It would be a shame if
Yadlin does not come up
with some kind of a viable
program to tangle with the
so-called "corruptive forces"
which have encroached the
soccer grounds of the Holy
Land.
The influx of shady
characters and hoodlums
has threatened Israel's
soccer position to the ex-
tent that it might not be
able to participate pro-
perly in the Olympic trials
and World Cup Games
scheduled for Argentina in
1978.
In the past, nothing has
been instituted by the Knes-
set Sports Committee con-
cerning matters pertaining
to Israel's athletic pro-
grams. That situation has
changed radically with the
advent of two young Knes-
set members, Yosef Sarid of
Labor and Ehud Olmert of
Likud. Olmert is a former
Betar soccer player.
Olmert is convinced that
dozens of league games
were "bought" last year. He
further disclosed that cer-
tain players and club man-
agers have what he called
contacts" "with a Mafia-
style mob going back many
years." They include top
names in the game, and
some . have acted as couriers
for these gangsters during
trips abroad.
Some people believe the
games have been fixed in or-
der to pick the weekly
sports lottery.
The Football Association
seems to be stymied and the
chairman of this group,
Menachem Heller, a good
friend of ours, feels that
corruption is rampant but
at the same time feels the
government has the power
and tools to tackle the situa-
tion.
