Sam Hechtman Celebrates 70th Birthday

Sam Hechtman's name
has been linked with the Or-
thodox community, with
roles in behalf of Yeshiva
University and local tradi-
tional educational move-
ments, as much as with the
Allied Jewish Campaign
and related causes.
His 70th birthday, which
he will observe on Tuesday,
will be occasion for encomia
from many local and na-
tional quarters.
Born Oct. 21, 1905, Hecht-
man is a graduate of the De-
troit College of Law and was
president and a director of
Practical Home Builders
since its organization in
1938.
In recent years he sold the
company, and was working

The Israeli Student Or-
ganization will sponsor Dr.
Theodore Friedgut, director
of the Soviet and East Euro-
pean Research Center at the
Hebrew University of Jeru-
salem, this weekend at the
Jewish Community Center
and the 10 Mile branch.
Dr. Friedgut will speak
8:30 p.m. Saturday in Room
4 of the 10 Mile Center in
English on "The Great Pow-
ers and the Arab-Israeli
Conflict."
At 10 a.m. Sunday, Dr.
Friedgut will address the
Jewish Parents Institute in
Room 384 of the main Jew-
ish Center. He will speak in
English on "The Jewish
Community in the Soviet
Union and the Absorption
of Soviet Jews in Israel."

Wayne State University's
Hillel Foundation will hear
Dr. Friedgut at 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday at Hillel. He will
answer questions on Soviet
Jews and their absorption in
'Israel. The public is invited
to all lectures, free of
charge.

him with a party Sept. 24.
Hechtman has been very
active in the Jewish commu-
nity. He has served as presi-
dent, vice president and a di-
rector of Federation
Apartments, was a co-chair-
man of pre-Campaign of the

Allied Jewish Campaign-Is-
rael Emergency Fund, and
served on te Jewish Welfare
Federation board of gover-
nors for four years.
He has been on the board
of directors of Yehivath
Beth Yehudah, was a direc-
tor and is an honorary life
trustee of Adat Shalom
Synagogue, was given the ti-
tles of guardian of City of
Hope and master builder of
Yeshiva University, and
served on the building com-
mittees of the new Jewish
Community Center, Federa-
tion Apartments and Adat
Shalom.
He has served in various
capacities and been honored
by: Park Community Hospi-
tal, Citizens Mortgage

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vik-
ser of Oak Park were re-
cently honored by their son
and daughter-in-law, Mr.
and Mrs. Jerome Vikser of
Farmington on their 50th
wedding anniversary with
the planting of an arbor of
trees in the Stollman Fam-
ily Park in Israel.
The story in The Jewish
News stated that Charles
Vikser had served as presi-
dent of Shomrey Emunah
and Bnai Jacob synagogues,
but omitted that the Viksers
are now active at Young Is-
rael of Oak-Woods.
