When Pennsylvania Gov-
ernor Milton Jerrold Shapp
formally announced Sept.
25 his candidacy for the
Democratic nomination for
President he became the
first Jew in 200 years of
American history to enter a
Presidential campaign in a
major political party.
Shapp became Pennsyl-
vania's first Jewish Gover-
nor in 1970 and was re-
elected with a majority of
300,000 votes last year for a
second four-year term.
In 1966, after he had sold
his business holdings, he
ran for public office for the
first time as a candidate for
Governor and defeated the
Democratic organization's

of Aaron Shapiro, a hard-
ware wholesaler in Cleve-
land who is a Republican,
and Eva Smelsey Shapiro,
a Democrat and a leader in
that city's women's rights
movement.

Shot-Gun Weddings May Soon End

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
shot-gun wedding, Arab
style, means firing into the
air as an expression of joy,
not pointing the muzzle at a
reluctant groom. But that
happy custom may soon be
ended in Israel.
Sheik Jabber Muadi, a
Druze leader and Deputy
Minister of Agriculture,
warned that he would ask
the authorities to confiscate
guns brought to wedding
celebrations unless Arabs
— and members ofhis own
Druze community — heed
his warning to cease fire.

•

He published his request
in response to appeals from
many wedding guests who
were wounded at the noisy
nuptials.

Nothing here:

LOW-BALANCE INTEREST is paid only on

the smallest amount in an account during
the entire interest period. (Most banks allow
ten days' grace at the beginning of each sav-
ings quarter.) Despite a large deposit on day
eleven of a quarter, no interest was paid be-
cause the smallest amount was zero on day
ten of the quarter.

NBS DAILY INTEREST is paid on each dollar

in your account every day it's on deposit.
This type of account (also called day-of-
deposit to day-of-withdrawal) gives you the
biggest return on passbook savings. In this
case, you earn 5% on the full amount for
82 days: $56.16

The difference between our daily interest and their low-balance method can mean
extra dollars for you every quarter on the same amounts of money put in and taken
out at the same times. If you make a lot of deposits and withdrawals, an NBS Pass-
book Savings Account is especially convenient—and especially profitable— because
you get every penny earned on every dollar saved for a day, a month, a year... or more.

Start getting 5% daily interest on your savings now at National Bank of Southfield_.
Bring in your passbook from another bank and we'll even handle the transfer for
you. Your savings belong where every day and every dollar count!

Shapp has participated in
three gubernatorial cam-
paigns for a more business-
like approach in the opera-
tion of government. He was
the first governor to bring
about an across-the-board
tax decrease in a generation
for Pennsylvanians. He has
led in consumer advocate
policies, programs to help
the elderly and handicapped
and in walfare reform.
In 1974, he gained wide
attention for being instru-
mental in ending the na-
tional truckers' strike and in
bringing about settlements
in other major labor dis-
putes. The AFL-CIO in 1963
voted him its "Man of the
Year," the first business-
man to receive thut honor.
