Month of Judgement

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

The usual blessing and
announcement for the ar-
rival of a new month is not
recited on the Sabbath be-
fore the month of Tishri, as
it is recited before the be-
ginning of other months of
the Hebrew year.
Some sources claim that
since the month of Tishri is
one of judgement, its corn-
ing is not announced so as to
confuse the accusing Satan
who acts as the adversary
on the Day of Judgement, so
that he will not be prepared
in time.
Others claim that since
the month of Elul, which
precedes Tishri, is spent in
penitence, blowing the sho-
far and other practices, the
public is certainly aware of
the coming of the first of
Tishri which is Rosh Has-
hana and no ceremonial on
the Sabbath is required.

There are some who
claim that when it comes
to this particular month of
Tishri the Almighty Him -
self blesses the month and
so we do not have to do it.

sin of the Golden Calf (since
the second tablets of the Ten
Commandments were fin-
ally brought down by Moses
on that day), the occasion
was chosen annually for the
prayers of forgiveness in
judgement.
It is also claimed that this
month was chosen because a
great number of special
commandments are tradi-
tionally observed in this
month (shofar, lulav, sukka,
etc.). It is helpful to be
judged at a time when many
virtues are being recorded.

Also, it is the fall har-
vest season. This means
that, being finished with
the harvest, man has a
chance to concentrate on
matters of the spirit.

In addition, during har-
vest, man performs virtuous
acts (such as tithing, etc.)
and such a time is one in
which the Zodiac sign for
this month of Tishri is a set
of balances to indicate that
man's record is then being
weighed on the scales of jus-
tice.

Tradition claims that
heavenly judgement is
passed on mankind in the
month of Tishri and not the
other months.
A number of reasons are
advanced for this. First,
some say that since the first
of Tishri is the birthday of
Adam, the day on which the
Almighty created him,
mankind as a whole has to
give reckoning for the ac-
complishments and failures
of his descendents.
Others say that since the
10th of Tishri was histori-
cally the date on which the
people of Israel realized that
they were forgiven for the
