Wittingly or unwittingly, these "leaks" and reports have become grist to the mill among those that would like to turn off the American public to Israel. The Jewish state, thereby is being cast as the heavy in the Mideast scene. The facts do not warrant this. There had been reports' that Israel would receive $300 million in compensation. The picture, therefore, of Israel as a militarily rapacious nation, anxious to involve the U.S. in a Mi- deast "Vietnam" and seeking to drain American financial resources is a portrait devoid of reality. The reality is that Israel has received verbal and written promises, indica- * * * Rabin reported two weeks ago that the idea of an American presence in Israeli Defense Minister Shimon Peres, left, is shown with U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger fol- lowing one of their meetings in Washington last week. As to American commit- ments to sell Israel new weapons, including Persh- ings, Kissinger last weekend told reporters that these arms are not new items that have been "submitted to U.S. during the negotia- tions" and•have been re- viewed, prior to the reas- sessment, begun last March, by all the agencies in Wash- ington. Also played down by the press was the study pub- lished two weeks ago by the International Institute for Strategic Studies which showed that during the past 12 months Iran increased defense spending from $3.224 billion dollars to NEW FALL FASHION JEWELRY IS HERE Green Lincoln Office Plaza 25900 Greenfield suite 100 Oak Park 968-1160 zA 7./ ./zzzzz z a ,w ,,,,, ,, ,,,# /./ IRVINGS FURNITURE CO. Israel's defense budget declined from $3.688 billion to $3.503 billion. As for economic aid to Israel, the $3 billion Israel had hoped to get is now down to some $2.3 billion subject to congressional ap- proval of which $1.5 billion is for military aid. Barely mentioned is the fact that Egypt will receive between $650-800 million in what is termed in Washing- ton as "non-military" aid for now. In addition, Kissinger has made it clear that the U.S. has not committed itself to "separate funding" to Israel in compensation for the oil she will no longer obtain from the Sinai wells that are being returned to Egypt. AZF Launches Israel Seminars NEW YORK (JTA) — A seminar for parents of chil- dren studying in Israel, a mission for academicians, an educational tour for cler- gymen, a seminar for An- glo-Jewish journalists and the convocation of a na- tional board meeting of the American Zionist Federa- tion are some of the nearly dozen varied educational conferences launched by the AZF to take place in Israel this year and next. The AZF study programs are being implemented by the Israel Seminars Foun- dation. To show its solidarity with Israel, Mrs. Faye Schenk, AZF president, said the AZF will hold its national board meeting in Israel in February, 1976, the first AZF national board meeting there.
