Soviet Jewry Rally Slated A mass outdoor Simhat Torah-Soviet Jewry Solidar- ity rally will be held 8:30 p.m. Oct. 4 in Oak Park's. Major Park, sponsored by the Jewish Community Council. The rally will begin with a flashlight procession from the parking lot of Cong. Bnai Moshe, down Church St. to the picnic area at the corner of Church and North- field St. Joseph Bale and Mrs. Aaron Shifman, chairmen of the Council's committee on international concerns, which is responsible for- planning the rally, an- nounced the evening will include: an opening prayer for Soviet Jewry by Rabbi Moses Lehrman of Bnai Moshe, a talk by Rabbi Joel Poupko, director of the Uni- versity of Michigan's B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, on the current conditions of the Soviet Jewry struggle and its implications 30 years after the Holocaust; and freedom songs of and for So- viet Jews by' Abraham Ben Zeev. In a letter to Detroit's more than 300 Jewish or- ganizations affiliated with the Council, Bale and Mrs. Shifman stressed the im- portance that a massive demonstration of solidar- ity will have for Soviet Jews. "No publicly visible mass rally to protest the oppres- sion of Soviet Jewry has been held in the metropoli- tan Detroit area since the Leningrad trials of 19" - Past experience has proN, that Soviet officials are sen sitive to public demonstra- tions in the United States," they said. For information about the rally, contact the Jewish Community Council, 962-1880. In case of rain, the rally will be canceled. Few Jewish Major Operational Executives in Auto Industry (Cp-ntinuedfrom Page 48) GM. One was Ed Weinberg at Saginaw Steering, now retired. • There are a number of minor operational Jewish executives at Ford but I doubt that their numbers exceeds one dozen. The same holds true for skilled workers. • There are no Jews hold- ing offices at Ford's World Headquarters' 12th or 11th floor, where the vice presi- dents offices are. Things are no different at GM, Chrys- ler, AMC, etc. • in my years, I did en- counter several instances where Jews were pur- posely excluded from sig- nificant positions because they were Jews. In most cases, however, this prob- lem never came up, simply because Jews were never placed into situations in which they could evolve. Each company has made the concession of placing a Jew into a visible, though inconsequential, median executive position, beyond which he was not prom- oted. • No doubt, there are Jews in the industry who hold significant positions. However, since the atmos- phere is not benign, many Jews see little need to be- come so identified, • The Anti-Defamation League is of course aware of this situation but has not been effective in causing a remedy. This is because the absence of Jews is not neces- sarily attributable to anti- Semitism, but more to the perpetuation of an estab- lished power group. One has to remember that there are at best a few Polish-Ameri- cans, Italo-Americans, Chinese- Americans in simi- lar executive positions. Also, the Iacocca- Cafiero-Ricardo phenonemon is at best 10 years old. I. have so far avoided the word 'tokenism' because it over-simplifies the situa- tion. If challenged, each firm can produce a num- ber of Jews in the afore- mentioned positions. However, until I can be shown a number of Jewish plant managers, , manufac- turing vice presidents, en- gineering vice presidents, plant foremen, etc., I will continue to believe that Jewishness in the auto in- dustry is not a major asset, neither now, nor 50 years ago when things were es- sentially the same. If we want to change the situation, then it is up to us to do so. No one else has rea- son or incentive. As you know, I am very active in the Technion Society and ini- tiated, among other things, a sort of concept of a Jewish engineering group within that Society. This is grad- ually producing results which would be greatly enh- anced, if it were to receive more publicity support. Then, more Jews in the auto industry would have the opportunity for a recognized professional outlet. Some years ago, I ini- tiated and largely pre-pro- grammed the Ford Israel truck operation, after creat- ing several other busir. opportunities for Isra:\e, manufacturers with Ford. You will recall that you car- ried a long interview with Henry Ford in this context. What you probably don't know is that, in preparation for this interview, the Ford press people obtained from me whatever they thought required for this interview. Ultimately, your item car- ried almost verbatim what I had supplied. I mention this episode only because it indi- cates the symptoms of the condition.
