THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS \ Egyptian Immigrants in Israel You Want Abu Rodeis Oilfield Held Boris Smolar's 'Between . . . and Me' Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, JTA (Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc. JERUSALEM (JTA) — Representatives of Jewish immigrants from Egypt appealed to the Israel Su- preme Court to block the transfer of the Abu Rodeis oilfields to Egypt until they receive compensation for property which they left in Egypt. Dr. Moshe Sachs and Shmuel Atiyah, head of the Council of Egyptian Immi- grants in Israel, said that the some 4,000 Egyptian Jews now living in Israel had left property worth $167 million when they were forced to leave Egypt. ACTION AND REACTION: I do not know if there ever was a case in American Jewish history when Jewish organizations brought charges against a member of the U.S. Cabinet before a federal court. The lawsuit which the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith filed against Secre- tary of Commerce Rogers Morton may be the first such complaint. Secretary Morton is charged with violating U.S. law and -cts of Congress by "promoting, aiding and abetting" Al )oycott operations against Jews in this country. Pres- ident Ford, it will be remembered, has termed the Arab boycott as "repugnant" and said that the U.S. government opposes it. Meanwhile, the govern- Ultimate responsibility for the policy of any branch of ment-owned Netivei Neft government lies with the President. He cannot, therefore, stand aside and watch how his public statement against Arab efforts to impose the anti-Jewish boycott upon Ameri- cans is being ignored by his own Secretary of Commerce. He cannot remain indifferent to the Jewish charge that the Department of Commerce is violating this country's anti- boycott policy and the Export Administration Act as well as the laws against racial and religious discrimination. JEWS ON GUARD: What makes the suit even more important is the fact that the Department of Commerce is not the only branch of government which is evidently ready iA to submit to the Arabs at the expense of discrimination against American Jews. By now it is quite clear that the State Department and other departments in the Administration are more inter- ested in pleasing the Arabs than in protecting American - Jewish firms and individuals against Arab discrimination. Various organs of the Administration have opposed every one of the more than 40 Congressional proposals to strengthen the laws against the Arab boycott. To them, the important thing is to attract Arab capital to this country, to secure more Arab commercial contracts for this country, and to penetrate into the money-rich Arab lands with American investments. It is estimated that at least 10,000 transactions complying with Arab boycott requests will be carried out this year by American fifms. Jewish organizations in this , country are not opposed to American trade with the Arab countries. However, they op- pose any assistance by any government (Mice to the Arab boycott against Jews. They consider the dissemination by the Department of Commerce to American companies of Arab construction bid invitations as such assistance be- cause the tenders contain restrictive trade and boycott prov- isions against Americans trading with Israel, or otherwise supporting Israel. GRIEVANCES AND VIOLATIONS: American Jew- ish history knows quite a number of injustices committed at various times by the U.S. government which deeply af- fected Jews. One of the major grievances voiced by Jews in this country was some 50 years ago when restrictive immigra- tion was introduced, practically ending Jewish mass-immi- gration. Another grievance was painfully registered by Jews during the Roosevelt Administration period when the U.S. government could have saved thousands of Jews from Nazi hands. In 1939, the ship "St. Louis" was forced to return with 1,000 Jewish refugees to Europe, where many of them later fell into Nazi hands and perished in Nazi camps. Jews in this country — in fact all over the world — felt depressed by these episodes. They considered them border- ing on inhumanity. However, there was no legal basis for them to bring anyone in Washington to court. The situation is different now when the-Department of Commerce openly states that it will continue to disseminate the Arab tenders with their anti-Jewish provisions merely because the U.S. is inter 4- ed in the Arab markets. According to reports from Geneva, the Israeli and Egyptian working teams have agreed on details of the transfer and the first Egyp- tians are expected to arrive at Abu Rodeis by the end of next week. According to news sources, the oil wells which Israel will return to Egypt will be useless within a dec- ade. There won't be any more oil to pump. f,, Will you accept the challenge and perhaps solve this incredible riddle?
