Prize Book

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

CHICAGO — Twenty-five
years after it was chosen for
publication in the Frieder
Literary Award contest,
"Cleft Roots," by Philip J.
Simon, will finally appear
in print.
Priam Press will bring
out the "new" book Sept. 30.
The author had been in-
formed of the award in

June, 1949. Six months
later, the judges said "Cleft
Roots" lacked "the high pur-
pose" of the contest despite
its previous selection and
promise of publication.

Caricatures

"The manuscript seemed
to be tailor-made for the
Frieder Literary Award
contest," stated Simon.
"True, the protagonist is hu-
man enough to have taken
steps to consummate an ex-
tra-marital romance. But
there is nothing porno-
graphic in the novel, and I
do think it met the basic
requirements of the con-
test."
Now, after twenty-five
years, readers will be able to
make up their own minds
about the controversy.

"Cleft Roots," he was
told, did not "focus atten-
tion upon Jewish survival
here through the integra-
tion of religious values
with the fundamentals of
American democracy."

were existing in the pre-
sent. An earmark of the
ancient past was the
struggle and wandering of
our ancestors.

The sukka itself is a sym-
bol of wandering (the wan-
dering of the Jewish people
through the wilderness —
always with a dream of per-
manent settlement). The
Jew learned to be at home
under the protection of the
Almighty no matter where
he lived, as did all of the
aforementioned forefathers,
including David who had to
flee from King Saul.
Some traditions bring a
special chair into the sukka
for the guest each night.
Others light a special candle
in honor of the guest of that
night. Some even light seven
candles every night in honor
of the special guest.
Hasidim would make a
great feast on the night that
one of the guests would bear
the same name as the
Rebbe. Tn Galicia the name
of the guest for the day was

inserted in a special frame
in the sukka that day. The
invisible guest in the sukka
parallels the invisible Pro-
phet Elijah who supposedly
comes on Passover night
and attends every Jewish
circumcision.

He would not change his
foreign policy, he added,
because it was in the su-
preme interest of the Ar-
abs and of Egypt.

Sadat accused the Soviet
Union of trying to poison
the minds of Arabs against
him by saying that there
were secret clauses in the
agreement he had nego-
tiated with Secretary of
State Henry Kissinger.

Geneva Talks:
Business as Usual

GENEVA (JTA) — The
Israeli-Egyptian military
talks on the implementation
of the withdrawal agree-
ment, resumed here on
schedule.
A conference source said
that it was "business as
usual" and that the two de-
legations continued where
they left off Sunday without
referring to Monday's at-
tempt by Palestinian terror-
ists to break up the talks
and force Egypt to denounce
the agreement with their
takeover of the Egyptian
Embassy in Madrid.
Security precautions were
dramatically increased,
however, as aresult of Mon-
day's terrorist attack. Doz-
ens of additional Swiss pol-
ice were seen at the
Egyptian delegation resi-
dence.
The talks were suspended
because of Yom Kippur. The
Israeli delegation attended
services at a Geneva syn-
agogue and broke the fast at
the homes of members of
the Geneva Jewish commu-
nity. •
