Poll Shows U.S. Supports M.E. Pact
Americans are prepared
to give cautious approval to
the emerging terms of the
interim peace settlement
between Egypt and Israel.
According to the results
of the latest Harris Survey,
a 42 to 28 per cent plurality
favors the use of American
technicians to man elec-
tronic surveillance devices
in the Sinai Desert, a key
provision of the proposed ac-
cord.
By a 2-to-1 division, those
surveyed believe that the
hape of the first-step set-
dement between Egypt and
Israel is both "fair and
just."
,
The survey was con-
ducted earlier this month
among a cross-section of
1,403 adults nationwide.
While the role contem-
plated for American tech-
nicians would be one of
manning electronic sur-
veillance equipment in the
Sinai Desert, the presence
of U.S. citizens makes the
public uneasy.

a 63 to 7 per cent majority.

those surveyed are not pre-
pared to pass judgment be-

about the future of peace in
the Middle East.
A 46 to 26 per cent plural-

Egypt nor Israel is likely to
keep the peace for the pe-

is to be in effect.
