THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Entering the luxury high-
rise apartment of Dr. Pau-
line Pevin Curhan, a guest is
greeted in the hallway by
plants and flowers which
continue into the apartment
and onto the balcony where
a frame of green encircles
the view into the northern
suburbs.
Dr. Pevin unplugs her
iron and moves the newly
pressed clothing out of her
way. Few would guess that
she is a pediatrician of long-
time standing and renown.
A native of Odessa, Rus-
sia, who came at an early
age with her family to Chel-
sea, Mass., and later to De-
troit where she married Dr.
Joseph Curhan, Dr. Pevin

YITZHAK
RABIN

President
of Israel

Israel's
Prime
Minister

"For your invaluable part-
nership in helping Israel to
live normally and creatively
despite abnormal stress and
tension, I send the friends of
Magen David Adom in
A merica the sincerest ap-
preciation of Israel's people
and myself"'

Her unpretentiousness

appears both in her dress
and manner. On the job
she never wears the doc-
tor's uniform — the white
lab coat. "When patients
come in and don't see the
white coat, they ask, 'Are
you the doctor?' "
When she speaks, one is
addressed as a friend or
grandchild and not in the
cool, lofty manner which
one might expect from a
professional. Her eyes alter-
nate with sparkle and tears
as she talks about her roots,
her beginnings in the field
and her family.
When she talks about her
patients there is love in her
eyes. On the job, at the Gra-
tiot Health Center, Dr.
Pevin comes in contact with
many mothers who have
poor educational back-
grounds. When she explains
to the mothers what is
wrong with their children,
she draws diagrams and
describes in simple terms
what is wrong so that "a

mother with only a third
grade education can under-
stand what's wrong with
her baby."
When she treats a pa-
tient, Dr. Pevin always
makes a follow-up phone
call to develop a more per-
sonal relationship with her
patients and to make sure
she diagnosed and pre-
scribed properly.
Although she is not ob-
servant today, Dr. Pevin
never forgets her Jewish-
ness. At an early age, she
was taught to speak and
write fluent Yiddish, an
experience which was to
help her treat patients
years later. As a physician
at the old Northend Clinic,
she was able to treat Yid-
dish-speaking immigrants
who came during the im-
migration wave of the
1920s.
At the outset, Dr. Pevin
tells her patients that she's
Jewish. "I think they come
to me because I'm Jewish,"
she said.
As a youth, Dr. Pevin
joined a Zionist group and
had an opportunity to meet
Justice Louis D. Brandeis.
She delights in recalling
hearing the justice speak.
"Just think, today I have a
grandchild who is going to
the university named for
that man."
Her husband, the late Dr.
Curhan, was a noted obste-
trician in the community. It
was he who urged her to go
into pediatrics instead of ob-
stetrics as she originally
planned. Even her sons, Dr.
Robert and the late Dr.
David pursued careers in
the health field, obstetrics
and dentistry, respectively.
Tears well up in her eyes
as she points out the paint-
ings of her sons in the ele-
gantly-furnished apart-
ment. Soon, they stop as
she talks about the
achievements of her
grandchildren and, of
course, her patients.
Prior to leaving, a guest is
treated to a tour of the
apartment. How does one
say "Goodbye Doctor" while
thinking "Goodbye
Grandma?"

Vandals Smear
Synagogue Sign

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Police of Arlington County,
Virginia have promised to
patrol regularly the Arling-
ton-Fairfax Jewish congre-
gation's synagogue in
nearby Arlington after van-
dals smeared its "Freedom
for Soviet Jewry" sign with
spray paint. Five swastikas
and "Hitler was right" were
painted on the sign.

"A nyone familiar with Is-
rael knows the magnificent
contribution the American
Red Magen David for Israel
has made towards our coun-
try's icellare. Yours is a life-
saving organization in the
most literal sense and for
this I express the gratitude
of Israel."

"It is comforting to know
that in the United States
you are behind the work for
Magen David Adom. I am
well acquainted with the
proposed project of the new
MDA Central Blood Bank on
the campus of the Tel Aviv
University. This is a very
important undertaking
which we agree with and
support."

"Magen David Adom plays
an important part in the
struggle of the people of Is-

our soldiers owe their lives
to MDA. The State cannot
carry the burden of the
maintenance of MDA and
every assistance given by
ARMDI is essential."
