Anti-Semitic Novel

LONDON — Alexej Plu-

Arab cause and to a world
Jewish conspiracy mysteri-
msly centered in Prague to
sabotage building in Syria
oy the Czechs of an indus-
trial plant "which is of
importance against Is-
ael."
According to the Czecho-
slovak Jewish Aid Trust,
is frank; his anti-

This view of the entrance to the Bar-Ilan University campus in Ramat Gan, Israel, will serve to reconstruct
memories of Detroiters' pioneering in the creation of what is now one of the leading institutions of higher learning in
Israel. Phillip Stollman, global chairman of the university's board, stated that at the annual dinner of Detroit
Friends of Bar-Ilan University on Sept. 18 the pioneers will be honored, the memory of those who helped found Bar-
Ilan will be duly recorded and many of the participants who were among the creators of the university will be given
special recognition. Dr. Leon Fill, general chairman of the dinner committee, and Zvi Tomkiewicz, executive direc-
tor of Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan, expressed special pride in having secured the world famous tenor, Misha Raitzin,
as guest artist at the dinner. Paul Zuckerman will be the dinner honoree and the presentation to him will be made by
Irving Bernstein, executive vice president of the United Jewish Appeal. For information and reservations, call the
Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan University, 398-7180.

Weizmann Institute Researches

Leukemia, Hodgkin's Disease

REHOVOT — A study of
the membranous outer cov-
erings of white blood cells
recently carried out by
Weitzmann Institute scien-
tist Prof. Leo Sachs has
shown that membrane char-
acteristics can be used to
clearly distinguish some
forms of leukemia and
Hodgkin's disease, a factor
which may be useful as an
aid in the clinical diagnosis
of these illnesses.

In addition, he has discov-
ered that myeloid leukemia
is caused by at least three
different disturbances in
cell chemistry, an impor-
tant factor in the character-
ization of this cancer.
Prof. Sachs, head of the
institute's department of
genetics and dean of its fac-
ulty of biology, examined
the membranes of white
blood cells from patients
with chronic lymphocytic
leukemia, and Hodgkin's
disease — a cancerous con-
dition of the lumphatic sus-
tem.

Working with Dr. Uri
Mintz of the Tel Aviv Uni-
versity Medical School,
he applied a group of re-
cently developed mem-
brane characteriiation
tests to the white cells, and
was able to distinguish

between each of the two
malignant conditions and
healthy blood.
The tests, because of their
simplicity, may serve as an
aid in the diagnosis of these
diseases. The tests were
able to diagnose abnormali-
ties in cell membranes of
patients showing clinical
remission of these diseases.
This indicates that during
abatement there are still
basic disturbances in cell
chemistry which are re-
flected in membrane behav-
ior, a fact which may pro-
vide a useful clue in
determining developments
in patients in remission.
Meanwhile, Dr. Benjamin
Salamon, managing direc-
tor of the Yeda Research
and Development Co. at
Vvreizmann Institute stated
that over $1 million worth of
novel electronic instrumen-
tation is exported by Israeli
industrial firms each year.
Yeda, a charitable trust
formed to interest local and
foreign industries in proc-
esses and instruments de-
veloped at the Weizmann In-
stitute, also revealed that
the chemical and related
industries are manufactur-
ing for local requirements
and exporting products
worth several million dol-
lars per annum.

Jewish Student Leads Festival

WINNIPEG (JTA) — A
19-year-old social work stu-
dent, Barb Daien, was
named Miss Folklorama at
the Festival of Nations here,
the first Jewish queen in the
four-year history of the
event. Ms. Daien was named
Miss Folklorama in compe-
tition with representatives
of 26 other ethnic-cultural
groups, and received a $500
scholarship from the Folk
Arts Council and will repre-
sent the Council throughout
the year.

Ms. Daien is a graduate of
Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate,
a Jewish high school, but
she did some brushing up on
Jewish culture and history

for her assignment as queen
of the Jewish pavilion.
Her father is a cantor at
the Herzlia synagogue. Ms.
Daien, who speaks fluent
Hebrew and Yiddish, served
as a hostess at the Shalom
Square, singing Israeli
songs and telling pavilion
visitors about each of the
pavilion displays.
