EVEN HARDER TO FORGET! That's Italy! Our first stop was Alitalia. More than anyone else, we know, Alitalia manages to help visitors plan the best, most economical vacation. For example, they have an Alitalia Europacar "Plan-it- Yourself" fly and drive trip to Rome and Sicily, as we did. Here's how it worked: first we mapped out our own itiner- ary; next we selected accommodations from an excellent list of hotels. Then Alitalia reserved our hotels, booked our 747 flight from New York to Rome and a self-drive Avis car with unlimited mileage — all in advance. They also offer many other dollar-stretching tours, sev- eral combining Italy and Israel. Enough to fit mbst any- one's tast and pocketbook. ROME — THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH! This city is literally bursting with over 2,000 years of his- tory, much of it of special interest to the Jewish traveller. THE COLOSSEUM: This immense amphitheatre was begun by the Emperor Vespasian in the year 72 C.E. and completed by his son Titus in 80. Did you know, however, that ':tintless Jewish prisoners brought to Rome after the fall of Judaea were employed in its construction? JEWISH CATACOMBS: Of the six discovered to date, two may today be visited. The more accessible is located on the Vigna San :".3ebastiano on the ancient Ap- pian Way. (Special written authorization, however, is necessary and may be obtained from the Superintendent of Antiquities of the Vatican.) ST. PETERS: The inte- rior of the world's largest church contains a column re- puted to come from the Temple of Solomon. It's just to the right of Michelangelo's famous "Pita" chapel, be- hind an iron grill.) Masterworks of Sicily. This mountainous island off the toe of Italy's "boot" offers a wealth of archeological treasures. The Greeks, for example, called this land "Magna Graecia." In fact, some of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world are located right here, in Sicily, near the city of Agrigento. Known today as the "Valley of the Temples," this fascinating archeological zone on the southern coast contains six major temples strung out along a flower-lined panaramic walk. The 34 column Temple of Concord, which dates back to around 450 B.C.E. is positively majestic. Impressive too is the Temple of Juno, from which one can enjoy wonderful views of the entire valley. The mosaics of Piazza Armerina. From Agrigento we drove north to the lovely city of Piazza Armerina, near the center of the island. The real attraction here, however, is the Imperial Roman Villa of Casale — the largest Roman construction still surviving in Sicily — and well worth a visit! This palatial villa, with its priceless mosaic flooring, dates back to the year 300. However, it was buried by a mud avalanche in 1100 . . . then long forgotten! Its "re- discovery" took place in 1921, after nearly a century of spas- modic research. Today, the villa's richly decorated pavements cover an area of over 4,700 square yards — almost the entire floor of the original palace! One mosaic design, for example, illus- trates a Great Hunt, teeming with elephants, tigers and wild boar; another depicts a group of maidens exercising in bikini-type costumes! Ah, this full-of-surprises land called Sicily! An Israeli Reservist Friday, September 5, 1975 65 MR. and MRS.
