GEORGE MAX: -2,1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111IL By HENRY W. LEVY (Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.) It is, of course, merely a chronological accident that th' Bar Mitzva of the Tar- both Foundation for the Ad- vancement of Hebrew Cul- ture is being celebrated during the year of Ameri- ca's Bicentennial. But it is an especially appropriate coincidence, for one of the cardinal princi- ples of the founding of this country, and the basic pur- pose of Tarbuth, is the fur- therance of the development of individual cultural tradi- tions. Established in 1962 on . the initiative of Dr. Emanuel Neumann by the Goodman brothers, Abraham and Ja- cob, Tarbuth—which in Hebrew means "culture"— has devoted itself to the pro- .motion of an extensive and varied program of Hebrew cultural projects. ' One of Tarbuth's earli- est efforts was the publica- tion of a "Modern Hebrew Classic Series," 'largely endowed by a Labor Zion- ist friend, Ralph Wechsler, featuring such authors as Agnon, Ahad Ha'am, Bar- ash, Shenhar and Hazaz, that has played an impor- tant role in servicing the more than 200 Judaic de- partments that have been created in American univ- ersities. Tarbuth has also spon- sored Hebrew in community camps, a Hebrew language program throughout the country and a half-hour tel- evision program available on Jennie and Sol King video tape, "To Israel With Hebrew," that has been suc- cessfully shown in a number of communities, including Detroit. It was one of the founders and major supporters of "Olam Hadash," the only Hebrew magazine for chil- dren published outside of Is- rael. It published a best seller, "Israel With A Smile," by the ulpan expert, Shlomo Kodesh. New efforts include: • A half-hour series, Is- rael Cultural Caravan, a te- leprompter cable television program that is available at low cost on video-tapes and cassettes for rebroadcasts on cable TV outside New York and for synagogue and other organizational adult education programs. • A series of thirteen plays from the repertoire of the classic Yiddish theater is scheduled for Station WEVD which will also be available on tapes. • A library of film strips on themes of Jewish cul- tural concerns. • A new program of cul- tural programming for the elderly, especially prepared foil. nursing homes and com- munity centers. • Legal aid and cultural program assistance to "landsmanshaften." • A methodology for the teaching of Hebrew to adults. • An extended camp programming for both teen- agers and the elderly being prepared by Dr. Samuel Grand. • The development of experimental programs in the fields of Jewish nursery. education and education for teenagers through enter- tainment programs. • A new program for cultural assistance for Jew- ish communities in Latin America, a field which up to now has been sadly neg- lected.
