THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Present Israeli Defense Lines in Sinai NEW YORK — Present Israeli defense lines in the Sinai Peninsula from Ba- luzza in the North to Ras Sudar on the Bay of Suez are 100 miles long. The sandy northern defense lines are based on artificial barriers erected by Israeli engineering units, while in the south, the defense lines cross the crests of the passes beginning at Urn Mahza and Urn Hasiba. There are at least four and possibly five passes through the southern heights: the Gidi, the Mitle, Sudar, Wadi Randal, and further south, possibly Wadi Jiran. These are the corridors into the Sinai Pen- insula. The Gidi Pass is three miles long, 20 miles wide. North of the Gidi is the Urn Hasiba crest, 1,920 feet above sea level. Foreign sources claim the Israelis have installed an electronic warning system at its sum- mit. The Mitle Pass is three miles long, six miles wide. It is the perfect ambush site. Maneuverability is made difficult by its nar- row width and the crevices rising up on either side. There are several advan- tages of present defense `All Congregations Shall Hail Thee Crowned King' lines in south Sinai to Is- rael. • Because of the passes, the lines are relatively short. • The ridges and the nar- rowness of the passes mean that the lines can be defended with rela- tively small forces. • The swampy area north of this line limits large scale Egyptian maneu- vering possibilities. • Only small armoured units are necessary to de- . fend the passes; infantry and anti-tank weapons are sufficient. The advantages to Egypt of controlling the passes are as follows: • Need not maintain heavy armour to defend the Suez Canal. • If the ridges now under Israeli control, such as Um Hasiba, were surren- dered to the Egyptians, they could, through elec- tronic devices, monitor not only the Sinai Penin- sula, but extensive areas in Israel as well. Israel, on the other hand, would have no electronic ad- vance warning system. • The surrender of the passes to the Egyptian army would increase the Israel defense line from 100 miles to 220 miles and deprive it of favora- ble topographic posi- tions. • The region west of the hills is flat terrain. If the Egyptians took over the passes and ridges, a breakthrough from the passes into the Sinai would mean not only the loss of strategic areas for Israel, but also the possi- bility of an extensive de- ployment of Egyptian armour. • In addition — all move- ments are observable from the ridges. From the summit of Jebel Raha, it is possible to see the clouds of dust raised by Israeli tanks as far as 60 miles away. The islands shall acclaim. And the peoples shall go seeking Who knew Thee not before, And the ends of earth shall praise Thee, And tell Thy greatness o'er . . . And all the congregations So loud Thy praise shall sing, That the uttermost peoples, hearing, Shall hail Thee crowned King. What matters is the in- tent—the intent to keep alive something worthy and mutual. This happens when people remember each other, cultivate each other, meet each other a little more than halfway. Such are the ways in which friendship may be shared. Nothing on earth is more important, for, just as it has been said that "to lose a friend is to die, a little," so the reverse is also true, and when you keep a friend you add something to the rich- ness and the worth of life. —Frank V.
