THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

AKIM Helping Israel Retarded

(Editor's note: The fol-
lowing article by Charlotte
Dubin, former Jewish
News city editor now liv-
ing in Jerusalem, ap-
peared in Israel Digest,
and describes the work of
a workshop for the re-
tarded in Jerusalem.)
Off one of Jerusalem's
main streets, wedged be-
tween two industrial plants
in the Tel Arza area, sits a
small workshop that spe-
cializes in hand-woven items
and light industrial assem-
bly work.
On the face of it, the
workshop is like any other
in the area. But the differ-
ence becomes apparent be-
yond the narrow doorway of
the plant. operated by the

Israel Association for the
Rehabilitation of the Men-
tally Handicapped —
AKIM. All of its weavers.
packagers and assemblers
— some 50 altogether — are
retarded.
It's not an unhappy place.
On the contrary.
Few industrial workshops
can boast a more congenial
atmosphere, where "em-
ployer' has inure than a cas-
ual interest in employe, and
where the employes take
extraordinary pride in their
products, such as the floor
cloths they produce for
Haifa Refineries and the
tahle mats grabbed up like
hotcakes at AKIM bazaars.
AKIM is more than just
a sheltered workshop in
Jerusalem; it is 36
branches in 36 cities with a
volunteer membership of
4,500. It is kindergartens,
vocational training cen-
ters, hostels for adults,
clubs, summer camps and

family counseling serv-
ices.
It is a voice for the re-
tarded, whose research and
example prod the govern-
ment and municipalities
into action and involvement.
Lack of understanding for
the retarded is not unique to
Israel, but many who work
in the field agree that Jews
attach a special stigma to
mental retardation.
It runs counter to their
picture of the idealized. in-
tellectual Jew. But retarda-
tion can occur in any family,
hit or miss, at any level of
society.
This is one of the points
AKIM counselors try to
emphasize in working with
families. As the organiza-
tion states in its literature,
"Rehabilitation of the re-
tarded member of a family
means rehabilitation of the
whole family."
It no accident that the
name AKIM has a two-
fold significance. It is both

own meaning: I shall com-

In all of its services, from
training centers to hostels
and summer camping,
AKIM has received the ap-
proval — and in many cases
financial assistance — of
the government, which re-
cognizes the great value of
AKIM's pioneering work.
Still, most of its finances
are derived from voluntary
donations both within and
outside Israel.
It's been a long road since
the 1940s, when a few par-
ents looked into the future
and saw a day when their
retarded children would
have no one to care for
them. Today, thanks to
AKIM, the future looks
brighter for Israel's very
special children.

REHOVOT — Thirty
teenagers from throughout
the United States partici-
pated in on-going research
projects on the Rehovot
campus as part of the Weiz-
mann Institute's seventh
annual International Sum-
mer Science Institute.
The American high-
schoolers, selected on the
basis of outstanding aca-
demic ability, were joined
by 35 students from Europe,
Canada, South America and
Israel for the four-week ses-
sion, organized by the insti-
tute's youth activities sec-
tion.

Their schedule combined
lectures, laboratory experi-
ments and demonstrations
on the Rehovot campus with
an opportunity to tour the
country and choose a special
field project, from among a
desert ecology center in the
Negev, a marine biology
station on the Red Sea, a
Nature Protection Society
field school near the Dead
Sea, and an archeological

dig.
