Women light more than
two candles for the Sabbath
because it was generally
deemed a good omen to have
many candles lit for the
Sabbath. Just as a curse
was symbolized by dark-
ness, so was a blessing sym-•
bolized by light.
The Lord is said to have
blessed the Sabbath and
this biblical statement was
interpreted to mean that he
blessed it with much light.
Some of the sources in
rabbinic literature (Shaloh)
mention a custom of light-
ing as many as 10 candles
for the Sabbath. Isaac Lu-
ria, the famed Kabalist is
quoted as calling for seven
candles to be lit for the Sab-
bath.
