JERUSALEM — British
Gen. Jan Smuts, a friend of
Chaim Weizmann who
helped write the Balfour
Declaration, was recently
recalled in a Jerusalem Post
interview with his daugh-
ter, "Louis" Smuts Mcll-
dowie.
Gen. Smuts, who later
was elected Prime Minister
of South Africa, was a pi-
oneer in the ranks of Chris-
tian Zionists.
Weizmann wrote about
his first meeting with
Smuts: "A sort of warmth
of understanding radiated
from him, and he assured
me- heartily that something
would be done in connection
with Palestine and the Jew-
ish people.
"He treated the problem
with eager interest, one
might say with affection."
Mrs. McIldowie was asked
whether her father's
staunch support of Zionism
was based on his religious
feelings, or on his thinking
that a Jewish National
Home at the eastern end of
the Mediterranean would be
a bastion of that liberal
British imperialism in
which he so fervently be-
lieved.
"It was definitely reli-
gious," she said. "He saw it
in terms of the Bible, and
liberating the Jewish peo-
ple. Actually, his support
for Israel was a political lia-
bility in South Africa, al-
though he never cared about
that.
"He was. one of the first
leaders in the world to rec-
ognize Israel, just before
the South African 1948
election: the recognition
probably cost him a lot of
votes. But he didn't care,
because he thought it was
the right thing to do."
Smuts lost that election,
and died two years later.
After Smuts' defeat in
1948, the Mclldowies stayed
with him on his farm near
Pretoria until he died.
He was naturally very
embittered about his repu-
diation by the South Afri-

TEL AVIV — Statistics
show that MDA — Magen
David Adorn ambulances
clocked - a total of 4 million
miles carrying out rescue
missions for the injured and
the sick throughout the
country last year.
As Israel's national Red
Cross Society, MDA cur-
rently maintains 73 first-aid
stations and substations
serviced by more than 500
modern American and Bri-
tish-made ambulances fully
equipped to provide patients
with emergency medical
care en route to hospitals.
All ambulances have two-
way radio sets linking them
to their stations, MDA
headquarters and MDA re-
gional communication cen-
ters.
ARMDI — American Red
Magen David for Israel, sole
arm of support in the U.S.
of Magen David Adorn, has

had forecast the possibility
of the country swinging to-

(white) nationalism.
"He also foresaw the
possibility of the rise of Af-
rican nationalist move-

of the continent, but he
never dreamed that they
would move at such a

Throughout his career
Smuts used his influence
