Bible Refers to Wool and Flax as `Shortness'

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

The combination of wool and prohibited this mixture from
being worn as clothing. A mix-
flax (i.e., linen) is referred to in
ture of these fibers is prohi-
the Bible as "shatness" (Lev.
bited as wearing apparel.
There are a number of opin-
ions as to the actual meaning of
the term "shatness" and its de-
rivation. The French commen-

tator, Rashi, claims that the

say that it means "a connec-

tion" (i.e., connecting the fi-

The Mishna (K'laim 9:5) as-
serts that the term is a combi-

nation of three words, shua
(combing), tovu (spinning) and

noz (twisting or weaving). Thus,
any one of these three methods

ment prohibited as wearing
apparel, i.e., combing, spinning

Mystics claim that the word
is a combination of two words
— "Satan" (the devil) and
"az" (strong or harmful) in-
dicative of the supposition
that the combination of these
two fibers would create a
harmful angelic being.
Others say that two words
make up this expression
(Shaota and Nuz) which to-
gether mean that the Almighty
turns away His protection from
one who wears a garment in
which these two fibers are com-
bined.
A modern lexicographer has
suggested that the word is
made up of two words — one
meaning "wool" (coming from a
sheep) and the other meaning
"something that sprouts" (i.e.,
that comes from the ground).
Nahmanides explains that
the Almighty, through the pat-
tern of nature, has destined cer-
tain properties to be kept apart
and distinct.

CHICAGO — Admiral
Elmo R. Zumwalt., Jr., U.S.
chief of naval operations
from 1970 to 1974, will be
among the principal speak-
ers at the 78th Zionist Or-
ganization of America na-
tional convention here in
October.
He will analyze America's
present defense posture in
the Mediterranean and the
Middle East and its impact
on U.S.-Israel relations.
He will analyze America's
present defense posture in
the Mediterranean and the
Middle East and its impact
on U.S.-Israel relations.
Chicago Mayor Richard J.
Daley will be chairman of
the honorary convention
committee which is now
being formed. It will consist
of prominent Chicago per-
sonalities and Jewish com-
munity leaders.

Thus a distinction was drawn
between living animals and
growing plants. Combining
these things destroys the inten-
tion of God in nature.
Some claim that heathen peo-
ples in early times used such a
combination to worship idols.
Some have attempted to show
that the combination of these
fibers can result in harmful.
chemical reactions that can
cause irritation and allergic res-
ponses in humans.

Still others have insisted
that it is one of the discipli-
nary measures of the Bible
which cannot be logically ex-
plained, except on the basis
that it is the will of God to
keep these fibers apart.
An interesting observation is
made by some commentators
who claim that the clash be-
tween fibers from animals and
vegetative sources is reminis-
cent of the clash between Cain,
the farmer, and Abel, the shep-
herd, which resulted in murder.
Keeping these fibers apart
signifies the respect and dignity
and individuality of each of na-
ture's assets, which must not be
lost through assimilation and
confusion caused by man.
