The 100th anniversary of
the death of Hans Christian
Andersen, Danish story-
teller, novelist and friend of
Jews, was observed Aug. 4.
In Denmark, the anniver-
sary has been marked by
numerous pageants, con-
certs, and exhibitions which
have been conducted since
April.
Andersen was described
as a man of universal hu-
manity, loving all. mankind
and finding many of his
staunchest friends among
the Jewish families of his
acquaintanceship.

JNF Plans Forest
to Cite Andersen.

phers found a bit of Ander-

his tales.
in true life, however, An-
dersen never won the prin-
cess. He was in love three
times, but even Jenny Lind,
with whom he had his most
celebrated affair, insisted
on calling him "brother."

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
To mark the 100th anniver-
sary of the death of Danish
writer Hans Christian An- -
dersen the Jewish National
Fund will plant a forest at
the outskirts of Nazareth in
the Galilee to be named
after him.
The JNF in Denmark has
organized a fund-raising
campaign for the forest, and
the reaction of both Jews
and Gentiles in Denmark is
positive.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
Israeli professor will be the
rapporteur for the United
Nations crime prevention
conference next month, but
the Israeli government will
boycott the event being held
in Geneva.
The conference was
moved from Toronto to Ge-
neva after a dispute arose in
Canada over admitting rep-
resentatives of the Palestine
Liberation Organization to
that country as observers to
the conference.
The Israeli decision came
after criticism was aired
that Prof. Shlomo Shoham,-
a lecturer on criminology at
Tel Aviv University, had
accepted an invitation from
the UN secretariat to guide
the discussion and organize
the professional papers. He
had consulted the Foreign
Ministry before accepting,
but critics here charged that
an Israeli was selected as
rapporteur to give the ap-
pearance of Israeli approval
for the conference.
The Foreign Ministry,
which supported Shoham
said that no official Israeli
delegation would attend the
conference.

Meanwhile, protests
are mounting in Britain

Another theme often re-
peated in the fairy tales is
that of death and dying. It is
a theme that, curiously
enough, many critics believe
is part of Andersen's appeal
to children.

His best novel, "The Im-
provisatore," contained two
chapters vividly describing
the squalor of the Jewish
ghetto in Rome.
Several wealthy Danish
Jewish families served as
his patrons and protectors
during his old age, and he
died at the home of one of
the families, the Melchiors.
Andersen did not want to
be remembered as a writer
of fairy tales. They were an
amusement for him, some-
thing he would read to
,young ladies at parties. He
wanted to he known as a
noveliest, poet, playwright
and world traveler as well as
a man about town.

To foster and preserve
this image, Andersen had
himself photographed
hundreds of times.

JERUSALEM — Bnai
Brith Hillel Foundations
will commemorate its 25th
anniversary in Israel Sun-
day with the opening of a
$1-million Beit Hillel on the
Mount Scopus campus of
the Hebrew University.

ment and educational digni-

following official confir-
mation that representa-
tives of the PLO received
entry visas from a British
Embassy in the Middle
East to attend the Inter-
Parliamentary Union con-
ference here next month.

The visas were granted
despite protests by Jewish
and non-Jewish personali-
ties and organizations. The
British Embassy issuing the
visas was not identified but
it is presumed .that it was
the Embassy in Lebanon.
One hundred MPs of all
three leading parties have
already signed a petition
presented to the House of
Commons deploring the
British move.
The Home Office said
that the Palestinians had
approached the British gov-
ernment about the entry
visas but that "While this
approach was being looked
at, some of the people were
granted visas overseas." The
visa grants are regarded
here as a victory for the ter-
rorists.
