Sen. Javits Hits Fulbright's Stand on Middle East

WASHINGTON — Re-

K. Javits (R-N.Y.) defended

bright relies largely on the
statements made to him in -
private by leaders of the
Arab countries. He seeks a
solution to the Arab-Is-
raeli conflict that is staked
on the good faith of the
Arab countries, and the
implementation of the
views their leaders have
expressed to him.

the Arab states are willing
to make peace with Israel
"on the basis of the 1967
borders."
The reality is that the

ship has as a matter of cold

pre-1967 borders — and,
indeed, bragged about it all
over the world.

Fulbright ignores several

key elements that are neces-
sary to any meaningful
agreement. He offers no
approach to a guarantee of
security against terrorism.
He omits completely any
economic plan that would
help to assure the growth of
mutual interest between Is-
rael and its Arab neighbors.
He sees guarantees by the
U.S.A. and the USSR as
important elements of set-
tlement, but the record it-
self indicates that such
guarantees by the United
States failed to avert the

This life-size bronze bust of Emperior Hadrian, one of
two known to exist, was found on a recent visit to Israel
by Morton Leventhal, a New York stockbroker and ama-
teur archeologist. Leventhal's discovery, both rare and
major, is valued in the tens of thousands of dollars on the
international market. The bust, dating from the Second
Century, will be exhibited at the Israel Museum in Jeru-
salem. Leventhal was exploring a field near Beit Shean,
south of the Sea of Galilee, hoping to find some coins,
which he saves. He was alerted by the "beep-beep" of
his electronic detecting device, and began digging. He
struck the bronze 18 inches underground. Following
Leventhal's discovery, the Israeli Department of Anti-
quities dug further at the site and found the head of a
_second bronze statue. It appeared to be that of a woman,
possibly Hadrian's empress, Sabina.
